Quiver0f10
We are expecting 4 INCHES of snow and it just barely started snowing and the whole area is closed. Not a school open and my DH doesn't have to go in to work! 4 inches is a flurry in Maine. :D

Not a school open and my DH doesn't have to go in to work! 4 inches is a flurry in Maine. :D LOL! Oh, 4 inches is big, big news here as you can see! We are right on the forecasted snow line and might get an inch or two. My dc are beside themselves with joy at that prospect! I just hope we miss any sleet and freezing rain. Dh just left for work which is about 30 miles away. Have a Happy Snow Day! :D

Snow in the south...it's a fun sight :D.
Mom2legomaniacs
It is funny! We lived in Rochester, NY for a while and really learned how to deal with and drive in the stuff. We we back home one Christmas (to KY) and they got a lot of snow. We were on the road behind a snow plow that was not handling it well. Clearly, he did not know how to drive in snow. SO, you are much better off at home given nobody knows how to drive in it. I wish we would get some here (TN). Have a fun snow day!
Diana in OR
We had 2" yesterday and the schools were closed. Not only that, but only certain areas of town got the snow (weird weather system). 1 mile from me was completely snow-free. Temp. was above freezing. I think, though, AR has a similar climate to OR. Part of the problem is that people where I live aren't really equipped to function with this kind of weather b/c it happens so infrequently. I do find some of the hype a bit pathetic, however. cricket1178
We are expecting 3-6inches here tonight and tomorrow. They are calling for 6-8in. north of us. I'm hoping we get at least the 6, but usually we get less. (I thought I needed the sunglasses, cause we all know how blinding the snow can be). Take it easy and enjoy your day. Jennifer in MI
LOL! We were driving through GA a couple weeks ago when they got a couple inches of snow. My sister called and told us that we'd better get a hotel room quickly because people will flock to them in the south in ANY snow!! So we stopped south of Atlanta. I'm really glad we did! But, yea, 4" of snow is nothing here in MI!!! My parents recently got 19" and school was closed the day that the snow came down, but open the next day! Pam "SFSOM" in TN
One of the issues in TN is that we usually don't get snow until we get that thin layer of ice first. The problems with driving often don't hinge on the snow, but the ice underneath.
Tracey in TX
Southerns don't know how to drive in anything but sunshine :) I grew up near Chicago. Driver's ed required ice and snow experience. In TX schools close for snow and/or ice. The cities don't have snow plows or de-icers to make driving feasible. Easier to call "snow day" and play!! Enjoy the sights--take lots of photos. It melts quickly, doesn't it :)
Tammyla
Tee, hee. Jean. I'm laughing with you. We had an official blizzard here Tuesday, and my dd's art class still was in session. Enjoy your family and the baby snow:D
Quiver0f10
The kids did have fun playing outside this am and are enjoying cocoa before we hit the books.
Kelli in TN
Seriously, 4"? We only got some slightly frozen rain. And of course there is no school here either. Gosh, I would love 4" of snow!
RoughCollie
I remember one time, when I lived in Atlanta, everything closed because the high temp for the day was 8 degrees. No snow, no ice, just cold. Here in Mass, we've had a few winters during which, when it got up to 20 degrees during the day, we thought of it as being warm outside. I guess it is all in what you're used to. Plus having snowplows and such comes in handy. When I moved up here, I had never seen a snow shovel. I was surprised that a regular old shovel wouldn't do. We are expecting 4 INCHES of snow and it just barely started snowing and the whole area is closed. Not a school open and my DH doesn't have to go in to work! 4 inches is a flurry in Maine. :D
Kris
Hi, Jean -- We're just up north of you and they're sending the kids home from school. This didn't hit us until after everyone was already there. I'm snowed in! It's only a few inches, but the snow isn't the problem. It's the gravel roads. There is a very small percentage of kids who do not take the bus, and the buses can't navigate these roads once the snow gets compacted and slick. The main highways will be fine, but these little side roads get no maintenance -- we're on our own. So if you can get out to the main road, you're fine. Then all you have to worry about it getting back home. ;-) We don't use snow tires or chains around here -- not much point in investing in something like that if you'll only need them maybe once a year. Back in the winter of '69, we lived in Portland OR and had a huge storm with drifts up to eight feet high. The kids were in heaven -- the parents were pulling their hair out! The oil trucks couldn't get in to deliver heating oil, and I remember my Mom telling me that my Dad was out at night stealing firewood! I *do* remember the cold and all of us hovering in front of the fire place. I'm not sure why Dad couldn't just ask for wood -- maybe he did? I do know he wasn't a thief, so things must have been pretty serious for him to resort to that. He got a transfer to California in the middle of that mess. I guess there were concerns that the moving truck could even get to the house! I was young and blissfully ignorant of the circumstances. We didn't usually get a lot of snow, but when we did, they didn't close the schools. We just put on our boots and walked through it -- and it was a ton of fun!
