7warriors
We are in year two of hsing. Dd11 is an average speller but has never had any spelling instruction/rules. I'm sure she would pick up phonograms and rules quickly and apply them if she were taught. Would you suggest SWR or MW? Or both? Thanks JeniRae

Mom0012
I used SWR for a number of years and am halfway through Megawords 1 with my daughter. I think for an average speller, I'd pick Megawords. It's much simpler to implement and unless your child needs something super intensive, I don't think I'd invest the time in SWR. Lisa
7warriors
Great! So does Megawords teach phonograms and spelling rules along with syllablication? Or would she need that base first? Any others agree or disagree with the suggestion of using megawords? JeniRae
Mom0012
Great! So does Megawords teach phonograms and spelling rules along with syllablication? Or would she need that base first? Any others agree or disagree with the suggestion of using megawords? JeniRae Hmmm, I only have Megawords 1, which focuses on syllabication. I'm using it with my daughter, who is a fairly strong speller. I do plan to continue with the program, though. Hopefully, someone else will jump in. I think it is Sue in St. Pete that has given a number of reviews about Megawords. If you do an advanced search for Megawords with her user name, I'm sure you'll find lots of great info. Her reviews about her son's progress are what made me think Megawords would be the better choice for an average speller. You could always buy the phonograms and spelling rule cards from SWR, but I do think Megawords probably teaches spelling rules even if it doesn't give explicit instruction on all of the phonograms, so I'm not sure I'd want to use the SWR spelling rules unless you are going to use that instead of MW. Anyway, sorry I can't be more help. SWR is pretty intensive with a big learning curve, so I'd hesitate to start it in middle school unless there was a fairly severe spelling problem. But, that's me. ElizabethB
I would supplement Megawords with a quick run-through of the spelling rules on my how to tutor page: http://www.thephonicspage.org/On%20Reading/howtotutor.html You will need #s 5-7 from the links at the end, and may want to have an online copy of the Blend Phonics Reader for a quick couple of words to spell for each unit. You could also print it out if you wish, but you will only need a few words from each unit so that might be a waste. Also, suffix rules are not included with that. You can watch my phonics lesson 22 to get those (free online, linked below) or in a week or two I should have my suffix rules complete in a pdf that I plan to add to my spelling page.
