Journey
can anyone tell me about this "curriculum"? I got the English Composition and Grammar (red book) out of the library and it looks like a winner. It's expensive to buy so I was thinking that if I use it with my, going into ninth grade daughter, I could copy off several pages at a time and use this as her Language Arts curriculum for the upocoming year. The problem is, is that I can't find the teacher's edition. Have any of you ever used this series and if so, can you give me your thoughts? Likes...dislikes...etc? My daughter is a bright girl but not real motivated in regards to schooling. She just wants to get it done and overwith each day! Thanks! Kim in Appalachia
and I have the one for 9th grade. I really like the compete course but it looked like I would have to really work with it to make it work for my 9th grader, so I odered a used copy of a Warriner's for 9th grade (I forget which "course" it is, 1st, or 3rd or something like that). Anyway, I really didn't like it. It seemed boring and not helpful in terms of the writing, which was my primary reason for getting it. I did not get a teacher guide. Maybe that would make it better, but I am unimpressed with it. HTH
Kathleen in VA
I used to have several levels and editions of Warriner's but could not find a teacher's edition a price I could afford. Frankly, although it is a good program, I think Analytical Grammar coupled with IEW Student Intensive C would cover everything you need and for high school grammar/composition and they are easier to use and readily available. Kareni
Seton sells some answer keys (not the teacher's edition) for Warriner's. See: http://www.setonbooks.com/viewone.php?ToView=S-EN09-04 Regards, Kareni
Robin in DFW
it just got very tedious and even with the answer key (didn't have ALL the answers) it just didn't work for her. I even had the syllabus. It incorporated grammar, vocabulary and composition from the book. We already had the other areas covered. We ended up with a grammar review book from the teacher store by Steck-Vaughn and it worked out well. Next year we are going with Stewart English from EPS and I'm waiting on IEW. If Stewart English doesn't work out, I may just go with Daily Grams and a grammar handbook to keep the skills fresh. Or, get an SAT grammar prep book of some sort and let her work at her own pace. Good luck in your search. It gets hard, doesn't it?! Robin
Jean in Wisc
We use the grammar the most. My 1st child did not do well with the writing program (but then she did not do well in any program!); my son is doing much better--it is more his style. I've used better writing programs, but I prefer Warriner's grammer more than any other high school program I've used. We do the grammar almost completely verbally--I sit with the TE and my dd with her book. It seems to be a very good match for us. I got my TE's used before they were out of print. I think it is pretty hard to find them now. There is a new edition out--I'd have to go digging to find its title, though. FWIW, Jean
