My 4 yodd's birthday is tomorrow and still no gift..

Recommended Posts

I walked around WalMart tonight like a zombie. You know the saying "where have all the children gone?". Well, I felt like screaming "where have all the good toys gone?". At one point I looked into my cart and there were about five 10 dollar plasticy junky toys that I know she'd enjoy opening but I would never see again after her birthday. So back on the shelf they went.

So what to do? As of now all I have for her is a big Disney Princess coloring book and some paints. But her grandparents gave me $40 to buy her something and I know they'll be phoning tomorrow to see what she got. Will a trip to ToysRUs prove more successful?

I was baking cupcakes the night before when I realized I had only one small coin purse to give her. I filled with it with quarters and said she could go crazy for a long time at the quarter machines! She was THRILLED. She was 8.

You could also make coupons: trip to the park, trip to the library......

1. Making beaded jewelry. I know Wal-mart does have those little containers of different colored beads. I like having pipe cleaners and jewelry twine around.

2. Board games: Lucky Ducks. Hi-o cherrio, Candyland, Boggle Jr., Busy Busy Bumblebee (I think. It's a spinning thing they try to jump over.)

3. Jump rope and a jumping bouncy ball (the kind with a handle that they sit on and bounce around.)

4. Dress up clothes. Everything from princess to police woman. Maybe you could hit a thrift/consignment store and buy some really outrageous stuff? I want to put a mirror up by their dress up box, but haven't got to it.

5. Videos of dancing. Riverdance, Nutcracker, musicals, Lawrence Welk, etc...

I was almost in tears at Christmas time when I could not find a gift for my 2 1/2 y.o. daughter. Every stink'n thing was Dora and she has no clue who Dora is. Most of the stuff wasn't that great either way except for the Dora appeal, which would be lost on her.

I did find a "My First" doll house from Fisher Price but obviously that's no help to a 4 year old.

Is she a baby doll girl, dress-up girl, Barbie-type doll girl, or a pets and critters girl?

I have a great friend with six kids. Their birthday tradition has always been to give the birthday child $x.xx and have them shop online or at Target or some store. Her kids can drag their b-days out for months and months and they have the best time doing it. I wish I had known about that.

Give your daughter the book and the paints and let her know that you and she will have a special outing to pick out something she REALLY, REALLY wants on xx date.

What about going to Build-a-Bear? My dd loved that at age 4 and still does.

And my other suggestion you may cringe at - but - My Little Pony. Yes, those little plastic ponies are a hit with little girls. For my dd, they were her "collection." Once I realized that she really did enjoy them I didn't mind too much.

Littlest Pet Shops are a big hit also - and those might take you into older ages than My Little Pony will.

Other ideas - dress up clothes, jewelry, nail polish, books.

. . . I wanted to mention that we started the tradition when my kids were little of giving them an experience for their birthdays, rather than just another toy that will get left on the shelf or broken.

So, for my daughter who loves theatre, we've taken her to touring Broadway productions and local (family-friendly) comedy clubs and other, similar events. My son has gotten some theatre tickets, too, occasionally combined with having Dad rent a convertible to drive him to dinner and the show. He's also gone indoor sky diving.

Of course, this reminds me that my son's birthday is coming up in a few weeks, and we haven't nailed down what we're doing with him this year . . .

but check out the playmobil toys. Most of the "cool" stuff will need to be purchased online but it is well worth the wait. Our daughters received some of them from Santa this past year and they are cute and very detail oriented. One daughter received the Carry Along Dollhouse and the other received the Horse Stables.

A plus with Playmobil is that they are not made in China.

The stable was so detailed that it came with horse poop! I kid you not. We have a few piles of plastic horse poop and a scoop and bucket to clean them up with. :D
