HollyinNNV
I finished reading Corbett. It is interesting. But, I'm not sure how to use it? There are a few ideas on copywork, imitating sentences and trying to write a sentence many different ways. However, I'm really not sure what the effective value of this book will be in the classroom? What have you done to implement Corbett? I notice that some of your kids actually read it. What then? TIA Holly
Jan P.
I think I would ideally have my child read it along with me and discuss it. Then I would have the child and myself do the excercises seperately, but then we could compare what we come up with. I haven't done this yet, but I'm thinking during my dd's senior year we might tackle it. I think many folks are opting to use The Lost Tools of Writing instead. Jan P. The problem is that there are very, very few exercises. I have the LTW and my high school students would find the program very juvenile, compared to how they write already. I guess I need something beyond LTW, whatever that might be. Holly
Leah
I think that you could take the general idea of LTW and simply make it more advanced-I do that often. I think you'd have to decide if you wanted to teach in a sequence of all the topics of invention, then arrangement, then elocution (I think that Tina in Ouray might teach it this way), or if you want to cycle them bit by bit (ala LTW.) For example, I recently had a class write a ceremonial essay so we used the special topics in Corbett for the invention, discussed various arrangement models and then edited and improved, using particular sections on schemes and tropes. For my experienced HS writers, this is admittedly not difficult, but then it probably shouldn't be. I see it as a time of careful refinement and most of my time is spent in more individual, personal critique and discussion.

Holly Holly, This is the reason I have been asking questions about LTOW. My ds hasn't mastered everything, but from what I can tell, I think he may need something beyond LTOW. Tina in Ouray
Are you guys still wrestling with what to do with Corbett? (I'm just back in from vacation and have missed following any discussions here.) If so, I'm considering taking my 17yo (senior) through Corbett next year. I haven't sat down to think through how I want to do this with her, but when I do, I'm happy to share my plan of attack. Kris
I haven't purchased the book yet, so I haven't seen what's there. I was going to following the instructions in TWTM -- would that not work?
