AndyJoy Posted February 28, 2012 Share Posted February 28, 2012 I'm teaching a motivated 15-year-old girl who wants to be an anesthesiologist. Though she's perfectly bright, her math education has been a bit neglected so we're just finishing Pre-Algebra in March. I would like to remain her tutor throughout high school, but that may not happen due to pregnancy, a move, unforseen circumstances, etc. What I'm looking for is a curriculum that can take her through Alg. 1, Alg. 2, Geometry, and Pre-Calc. Preferably, it would have videos and the text would be written to the student. I would remain her tutor as long as possible, but she could continue on her own if I can't (with help as needed at night from math-major dad). Her schedule is quite busy with sports, family, etc. so a video teacher would give us some flexibility for her to still progress when she can't meet with me. She's planning to complete these 4 courses by June 2014 and will be doing math during the summer. Any suggestions? I also have a dh with a math major who can go over everything at night if needed. It's working for my oldest. I had really looked into the Robinson Curriculum, heavily. I even bought it and got a new printer. But the when we actually started, I realized it wasn't going to work for us. BUT Robinson says Saxon is written to the student/self teaching. That is the way we are using it. DD is getting a B in math, teaching herself. I sometimes can follow a problem through since we have the solutions manual (not just the answer key). DD could get dh to teach her math every night but she is not motivated enough to do that. Saxon does have videos now, but I can't comment on if they are good or not as we don't have them. Second child is only in Algebra 1 and needs me to teach her every day. That's fine. I understand algebra. Susan C. Posted February 28, 2012 Share Posted February 28, 2012 I was very happy with BJU for Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2. Then Lial's Intermediate Algebra or Precalculus depending on whether she is a math whiz or not. The BJU dvds have a 45 minute class for every day of the school year. Lessons are introduced, explained, and reviewed. Homework problems are assigned, quizzes are given, tests are reviewed for, and given with guidelines for grading. Videotext is very efficient and thorough and lends itself well to the student working independently. If she moves through it quickly, she could do a precalculus course in addition or work with a tutor to solidify everything and maybe cover some advanced topics (such as matrices) that VT doesn't get into. Another option if you go the VT route, but decide you want to do a separate Precalc course, would be to go through module D of the Geometry and then switch to Precalculus using another curriculum. AngieW in Texas Posted February 29, 2012 Share Posted February 29, 2012 I really like Kinetic Books. Right now it only goes up through Algebra II, but their Algebra II is pretty comprehensive. I have Lial's Algebra II as well and it definitely goes deeper than Lial's does. It also covers trig. I'm using Lial's Precalculus with my middle dd this year and haven't run across a single topic yet that wasn't already been thoroughly covered to the same depth in Kinetic Books Algebra II last year. I'll check out the others next. This is actually making me think about switching all 3 teens to Derek Owens, and then just meet with them individually for an hour once a week for some live help. This would give them/me much more flexibility than our current schedule of 30 min. per teen 3 times per week. It's hard to get our schedules synced so that I can have all of them at once!
