El...
Hi! This is my first post, but I've been reading the forums here for several months since I found them via SWB's website. I really enjoy the information here! My daughter is 4 and almost ready to start a math program, I think. She can count to about 39, identify the numerals but not two-digit numbers, writes numerals for fun, and still counts each item (no sets, no abstract stuff). What do I need to see her able to do before I start Singapore math? I like the samples of it I've seen online, and I would gather the items used in the lessons for her to handle (coins, etc.). I could always break out the M&Ms and teach her to add, but I think we'd both like a book. Thanks very much!
boscopup
Singapore Essential Math K would be a good fit. She will likely FLY through book A, but I think it's interesting to work through, discussing things as you go. There are sometimes multiple right answers possible. Book B gets into double digit numbers, adding and subtracting single digits, etc. I started DS2 in Book A when he was 4. He's doing Book B now (he was behind your DD when he started - was only counting to 10 and that's it). I also recommend using Cuisenaire Rods with book B. It is amazing how well a 4 year old can see numbers using those simple rods. :D
KristenR
I started my dd on Miquon when she was 4 and it has been a constant source of joy. We included Singapore 1a a few months ago and I feel the two programs together are perfect. I don't know if you are familiar with Miquon but I did a post about it here and some other posts about activities and games to go along with it. If you haven't checked out Miquon, I highly HIGHLY recommend it.

MamaReads
I second Miquon for the number sense it gives kids as well as the minimal writing. Another option is RightStart math, but I think that Miquon is more natural for kids (at least mine) to play with & understand.

El...
I was a little scared by Miquon because when I looked at the sample pages online I had no idea what they wanted you to do! I'll look into Miquon again. I have C-rods but don't know how to use them yet. Those blog posts were great, esp. the one about math being your favorite, Kristen. :001_smile: Thanks for the advice!
