Best audiobooks/favorite readers?

I've been venturing into the world of audiobooks, which is neat but uncharted territory for me. I'm trying to find some audiobooks or readers that you think have been AMAZING. I'm really picky about the voices of the readers, and don't really like Jim Weiss. So far Ariel and I have enjoyed The Railway Children read by Karen Savage and Just So Stories with Tim Bulkeley. (I've been using Librivox since I don't want to spend money on a story I can't stand to listen to, but I'm open to buying them if they're that good.)

So, what are your favorite (preferably unabridged) audio books? Who are your favorite readers?

Currclick has quite a few Blackstone brand audiobooks for about $6.00 that are SO much better than the ones at Librovox.

I'm currently using FAR (Far Above Rubies Unit Study) for my self-education. For unit 1 I am using Elsie Dinsmore which is a bit of a babyish book for me, but it has some excellent vocabulary, and I wanted to see what all the controversy is about, and CBD has a cheap copy of the book and study guide, so...well anyway...

I started with the free Librovox audio and then splurged on the Blackstone one...and...just...wow! What a difference. I'd love to be able to read aloud that well. The book is an example to me, of what I should be attempting. I'm listening to the same chapters over and over again, to just listen to HOW the reader reads. I'm going to have to find out what her name is.

I've been reading in the vintage LA books about reading aloud, and I want to study more about that. The more I study about what k-3 education is supposed to include, the more I despair of ever graduating the 3rd grade :-0

Among our favorites so far...

Chronicles of Narnia, unabridged, read aloud by various British actors and very enjoyable

The Phantom Tollbooth, read aloud by David Hyde Pierce (our current audio book)

Harry Potter series, read aloud by Jim Dale

Any of the Roald Dahl books read by Roald Dahl, as well as the books narrated by others

Half Magic - has a full cast

Mr. Popper's Penguins, I think narrated by Nick Sullivan

I know there are more, but I'll have to think on it!

We listen to audiobooks on cd in the car while doing our normal driving around. I think the kids get more into the books listening to professionals. But I've only gotten them from our library...haven't bought anything or downloaded. We haven't listened to anything strictly "educational". I want this time to be more for enjoyment.

So far I've been really pleased with what I have picked out....

1.Gregory the Overlander- 5 book series by Susan Collins....we all LOVED these!!!!! The boys and I were upset when it was over. We didn't want the series to end.

2.Island of the Blue Dolphins-Scott O-Dell.....This was good because it was read by a native american

3.Knucklehead-Jon Scieszka...We laughed alot at this one.

4.Hatchet-Gary Paulsen...this was good too.

My choices are geared toward my boys interests and ages. I want to get more into classics too.

Thanks for the suggestions! I think Ariel may be getting the Roald Dahl set for her birthday. She loves his books.

Has anyone listened to Treasure Island with Alfred Molina or Peter Pan in Scarlet with Tim Curry? I ran across these today while I was looking at others and the clips I heard were pretty good.

All the books in the Laura Years Series (Laura Ingalls Wilder) Little house in the big woods, etc.

performed by Cherry Jones.

My son, 8 has listened to them each at least 2 or 3 times each and he said the other day, that (besides his mom), Cherry Jones is his favorite voice. :) We get these at our public library.

I haven't been able to locate this myself, but when I addended the Charlotte Mason Seminar, (SimplyCharlotteMason.com) the speaker said her family's favorite was

Flo Gibson reading, Wind in the Willows.

We LOVE audio books so I am sure I'll think of more.

Here are three of our favorites.

1) We really like Cherry Jones readings of the Little House books. We have Little House in the Big Woods and Little House on the Prairie read by her.

2) There's a dramatic reading of Alice in Wonderland on librivox that my six year old loves.

3) The reader for the My Father's Dragon series of books is also very good.

I'm surprised anyone likes Cherry Jones reading! I got Little House at the library by her and was appalled. her voice is so unpleasant to me. My son likes to listen to her, but I don't think he knows any better.

these are the best audiobooks I've ever heard. We listen to them over and over.
