ThelmaLou
Or do you just do the videos? (not talking about the worksheets in the book, but the worksheets that can be printed off from the teacher's cd rom.) Do you adminster the tests? How do you use this with your kids? Also, is this worth 1/2 credit?
mooooom
90 day schedule that it came with. It utilises most of the add'l printouts, but I removed the ones that look like they are for classrooms (a few each lesson). I am giving my kids .5 credit, but they are also reading Nickel and Dimed and Richistan
Lolly
The honest truth. I just have them watch the video and fill in the workbook. We have interesting discussions after the videos many days. I give a half credit. Is it truly worth a half credit? No. However, it is not a class I would have mine taking; but it is required for graduation according to the state of TN and our cover school. Therefore, they get the half credit.:D
Cheryl B in VA
I currently have my college son and high school junior watching this course. They do the note-taking, we have discussions, and when we come to a chapter review we do it orally. I do have my high school student complete the unit tests as open book tests. In addition, my high schooler will complete "Life Prep for Homeschooled Teenagers" by Barbara Frank. I am giving a half credit for those combined. Let me add: This will be .5 credit of Personal Finance. He will be doing a .5 credit of Economics next year. Lori D.
Or do you just do the videos? (not talking about the worksheets in the book, but the worksheets that can be printed off from the teacher's cd rom.) Do you adminster the tests? How do you use this with your kids? No. We just did the video and workbook -- NO additional worksheets or tests. I counted the end of chapter review as "quizzes" for grading purposes. Also, is this worth 1/2 credit? Not in my opinion. It is 12 hours of DVD lectures and a workbook you do simultaneously. In my opinion, to make this a 0.5 credit Personal Finance course, you would need: - discussion - some sort of weekly quizzes - readings on Personal Finance - weekly projects or exercises and/or a single longer final project (Those resources listed by other posters looked good!) To count Dave Ramsey towards .05 Economics credit, you REALLY need to add resources that cover microeconomics (covers individuals/businesses, supply & demand, prices, goods & services, capital, etc.); and macroeconomics (covers issues of growth, inflation, unemployment, etc., and how a government's policies effect these issues). For us, to make Dave Ramsey worth a 0.5 credit Economics we did: 1. Dave Ramsey Foundations in Personal Finance (DVD and workbook) 2. read "Whatever Happened to Penny Candy" (a middle school level book) 3. watched, discussed, took notes, took quizzes on "Teaching Company: Economics", lecture series on micro and macro economics (36 30-minute lectures, for 18 hours total teaching time) But, that's just my opinion! Others count this differently. :) BEST of luck as you make your own course! Warmest regards, Lori D. Edited January 31, 2012 by Lori D. GailV
Or do you just do the videos? (not talking about the worksheets in the book, but the worksheets that can be printed off from the teacher's cd rom.) Do you adminster the tests? How do you use this with your kids? Also, is this worth 1/2 credit? I picked through the worksheets to find which ones seemed worthwhile. We also tweaked some of them -- dh has definite opinions about investing, for example. Also, some of them needed to be revamped to use with a lone student. We also read Scratch Beginnings (a reply of sorts to Nickel and Dimed) and discussed it. We are also closely related to a realtor, and 2 people in the insurance industry, so we had some discussions there, too. We did all of the tests. They're really not that hard. We considered this a 1/2 credit of Personal Finance.
camikins2010
We are also doing Dave Ramsey for personal finance credit and only doing the DVD and workbook. I will probably add "Life Prep for Homeschool Teenagers"...thanks for the tip Cheryl.
Cheryl B in VA
I think it is an awesome resource.:001_smile:
ThelmaLou
I'm thinking at this point that I'm going to do all the tests, workbook and dvds, but only *some* of the worksheets. We also listen to Dave Ramsey in the car when we can. I think I'll also add Whatever Happened to Penny Candy and Basic Economics by Thomas Sowell. My oldest did take an Economics course last semseter for 1/2 credit at a co-op, but the section on personal finance toward the end was lacking, which is why I'm doing Dave Ramsey. This semester using Dave will also help my son satisfy some requirements for the Personal Management merit badge.
