Gamom3
I purchase sugar in bulk(50lbs)..I have yet to find something to store it in. What do you use and where did you get it?
Kelli in TN
50# of sugar? Wow. I don't buy sugar in bulk simply because I don't know how or where to store it. I fear I would end up with the world's biggest sugar cube. We go through about 4-5 pounds per two week pay period (it is all that southern ice tea). I just buy it as we go. I do buy other things in bulk, however. Flour goes in the deep freeze, grain goes in my special buckets with the cool spinning lids, everything else just gets crammed into the cabinets wherever it will fit. Jennifer in MI
I also don't buy sugar in bulk. We only use 5 pounds every 6 months or so. But, I store all my bulk grains in the deep freeze until I'm ready to use them. I have buckets and smaller containers that I use to store smaller portions of the things I buy in bulk: rice, oatmeal, wheat berries, pastas, etc.
Gamom3
During the summer we were going through the bag in about a month and a half ..now we have had a bag for about 4 months and still have about 15# left. It is just cheaper for me to purchase it in bulk. I might have to start buying flour in bulk..now that Ds cooks everyday.
Quiver0f10
I ordered 5 gallon food quality buckets from my food co-op($5.00 a piece) and labeled them with a sharpie. They are stacked in a corner of my kitchen. Not beaultiful, but it works. Edited: I have also gotten 5 gallon buckets for free from Dunkin Donuts and other bakeries. KS_
We buy flour, oats and wheat in 50# bags and I store them in 5 gallon buckets in our storeroom in the basement. I got most of the buckets from bakery depts in grocery stores (many will give them to you free, some charge $1 or $2). Most of the lids I've received with the buckets still fit tightly, so I've never bother with the gamma seal lids (I think that's what they're called?). When I was baking more, I'd also buy my sugar in 50# bags and store it the same way - and never had issues with it becoming one hard lump (and we lived where it was pretty humid). BarbaraL in OK
I keep 10-15 pounds of sugar in a Tupperware container in my pantry (Modular Mate rectangular 4, if that means anything to anyone). I think I could fit a bit more, but I leave it in the bag(s). Flour I almost always freeze for at least 24 hours to kill the critters -- unless I'm baking a lot and will be using it up in a week or two. I usually just leave about 30 pounds of flour in the freezer, and keep 10 pounds of (all-purpose) flour in the pantry in another MM rect. 4 container, along with a 1-cup measuring cup. I've started keeping white wheat flour and whole wheat flour in the fridge, because when I keep it in the freezer it's always too cold to put right to use in a bread recipe. The "stash" of WW flours and stone-ground cornmeal, though, I keep in the freezer in MM square 2 containers. And yet, I have a 25-pound bag of wheat berries in my freezer that I need to put in some sort of containers. I have a couple I'm going to try, 'cause there's no way to seal that bag again once it's opened! I'm curious about the buckets with the swirling tops? What are those? I'm ready to buy things in greater bulk, but I'd rather have a way to keep them at room temp 'cause the freezer doesn't have room for everything I'd want to have on hand, lol. Jackie in AR
I purchase 25# bags of sugar from Sam's, and I store what will fit in my big Tupperware container and the rest (in the big brown bag) goes in one of my bottom cabinets. The Tupperware container gets replenished as needed. I purchase wheat berries for my flour and store them in those big tubs with the twirly lids. :)
Amy in NH
I store sugar, wheat berries, rolled oats, and rice (25-50# bags each) in 5 gallon buckets with gamma seal lids. I never had a problem with my sugar until the last shipment. I think the bag was exposed to humidity because there are clumps which are frustrating to work with. orangeblossom
We store flour and sugar in buckets that seal tightly. Believe it or not, my MIL asked the bakery at her local grocery store for their butter cream icing buckets and they gave her a bunch. They work great.
