Apologia Science

Recommended Posts

My daughter will be going into the ninth grade. Quite honestly, there are many other things that she would rather be doing than science and history. I was thinking about Apologia Science but I know nothing about it. Cost is definately an issue for me, so please let me know if it's affordable along with any other information you can give me. She pretty much does school by herself so, is it self teaching? Also, what would you suggest for History for the above mentioned student?

Thanks!!

I would say it is affordable - you can buy Apologia used very easily and they have a good resale value. I have bought and sold mine for virtually the same price. then you have to buy the lab equipment - but that would be true of any science program for high school. I buy from Sonlight, Apologia or Homesciencetools.com - wherever is cheapest.

And my kids have done all their Apologia by themselves. I just grade the study guide questions and tests.

Well, initially I was heading towards BJU DVD Biology---but the cost was shockingly prohibitive if I added in some hands on labs!! I went ahead and got Apologia and I am pre-reading it before dd starts it in the fall---and I am finding it very, very interesting and understandable. But more improtantly---Apologia is affordable and doable at home if you want hands on labs for high school. :)

Pertaining to science:

I've used Apologia, so I can remark on it.

I like it, it's very easy to use as "self-teaching" as the text is written to the student. You could buy lab stuff, or you don't have to. A lot of stuff you could easily get at home (till at least biology for disections and chemistry).

It is written from a young earth view point. That's significant if you aren't a "young earther" (which I'm not). However, I find I can work around it fairly easily. (Others do have issues with it though.)

My eldest son doesn't do the labs. He feels he gets a lot from just reading about them. I really find I can't argue the point, as I recall all too clearly my own highschool science experiments where I would follow the directions to a "T" and NEVER have the experiments turn out. (It got to the point that the teacher became my permanent lab partner, and he determined I was "jinxed".) My 2nd son is looking forward to the experiments. (Sadly, I'm concerned about that as he takes after me in so many ways. . .)

For Apologia you can find a number of schedules that will make your life a bit easier.

donna young.org has some (free)

I have some on my blog (free)

Sonlight sells them

I find you can buy Apologia new cheapest at Rainbow Resource (generally -- of course, there are occassions where that isn't true, so check it out). Ebay is a good source of used. . .other places too, I'm sure.

I don't have experience with other sciences, so I can't compare.

We have used General, Physical, Biology, Physics, Chem and Adv. Chem. The experiments are easy to do and they don't require expensive supplies. The explanations in the text are clear and Dr. Wile is available by email for support if you need it. We emailed him several times with Adv. Chem. questions and he replied within 24 hours.
