Panida Press History Odyssey vs K12 Human Odyssey

Can anyone help me decide? My dd will be in 5th next year, and right now, for history, I'm leaning towards either starting History Odyssey OR doing 2 years of History of US and then going into K12 Human Odyssey for 7th through 9th. Here a few things about our situation:

-We need secular materials.

-Dd is not a strong reader or writer yet. We're working on it, but I will be reading a lot of the history aloud to her.

-I need direction. I don't have time for a lot of teacher prep and planning. History Odyssey tells you step by step what to do. But I think with K12, you only get the textbook (for $99!). Is there any teacher instruction included?

-Would like to do history 2-3x/week.

-In either program, is there enough US history included, or do you find that you need to supplement?

Thank you for any help/advice/opnions!

ETA: I realized that I have asked this question before, but if anyone new would like to share their opinion, I would love to hear it.

We are doing History of US using K12's new concise version of Hakim. I have used the regular Hakim before and this new version is *much* better on so many levels. You can buy it from K12 but they don't have the online courses that go with it available for independent users yet. We will be doing US history over one year and then doing three years of world using K12's Human Odyssey.

As for K12's Human Odyssey, it is truly excellent. I have only used the texts and not the online course (the online course would give you the instruction). I read them aloud to my older son and they are so well written that they read aloud beautifully. I just assigned topics for writing that went with what we were studying in the text and supplemented with historical and period fiction.

For both, the only planning I did was to find some supplemental books and align them with chapters in History of US/Human Odyssey. The topics for papers I decided on as we went through the material.

Thank you. Why do you prefer the concise version?

You said you assign supplemental reading and align it to the chapters in Human Odyssey---do you feel this is *necessary*?

Kai, when I look at K12's store, I see the History of US Concise volume A and volume C but I cannot for the life of me find the other 2 volumes. What am I doing wrong?

This seems like a good option because I could probably cover it in 1 year instead of 2.

I prefer the concise version because it is easier on the eyes with wider spaces between lines of text, larger pages, and larger type. It also has much better illustrations (they are beautiful). They have also gone through and eliminated much of the wandering quality of the original version. Also the chattiness has been mostly reduced to parenthetical statements rather than completely interrupting the flow of the narrative.

You don't have to supplement the Human Odyssey. It stands alone quite well. But we enjoyed reading retellings of ancient stories and other period literature as well as historical fiction to spice things up.

Thanks for the review.

The other two volumes aren't out yet, but they're supposed to be out in December.

Ok. It seems odd that they didn't release them in order, though.

K12's US history is a 2 year sequence (5th and 6th grades, I think), so Vol A is first semester of Year 1 and Vol C is first semester of Year 2. So, it makes sense for them to release A & C and B & D together. ;)
