hsmamainva Posted May 27, 2008 Share Posted May 27, 2008 My oldest son had a problem learning how to read with phonics also. He just couldn't hear the difference between the vowel sounds, especially short e and short i, so all the 'ba-be-bi-bo-bu' drills didn't work for him! He learned to read with Alpha Phonics, which is unique in its approach as they use word ladders. 'ball - call - hall - tall - wall'. I believe BJU might use this approach as well, but Alpha Phonics is one book (I think I paid around $30 for it) and, by the time he completed the book, he was reading on a 2nd grade level and went straight to beginning readers (Frog and Toad, etc.) and then on to easy chapter books (Magic Treehouse, etc.), and then he just took off from there. Ottakee Posted May 28, 2008 Share Posted May 28, 2008 You might look at the I see Sam program http://www.iseesam.com It IS phonics based but they keep similar sounds FAR apart from each other in the teaching sequence.
