Has anyone given up on a job they liked because it

Recommended Posts

took too much time?

I took over as the early childhood coordinator for our music school over the summer, and it's been a nightmare as far as trying to get faculty to cover classes, then students FOR said classes. I'm paid for 5 hours a week, and 25 hours a week is probably an underestimate. Which worked so far mostly because DD did gymnastics camp most of the summer. I've also had to drop the curriculum writing side temporarily. I've been able to make HSing work so far this school year, but in the next week all her extras start, and that makes a BIG difference.

I'm seriously considering quitting. If I do, there probably won't be an early childhood program at this music school anymore. And I won't have a place to teach my classes, which I love-which, in turn, will make it next to impossible to do the curriculum development because I need to be able to field test what I do.

So, I'd be quitting a job I love, and that, until I took on the administrative role, was compatible with HSing entirely-but it would reduce my stress load and time drain dramatically.

I really don't know what I should do. I don't see a solution between "Work my tail end off, mostly unpaid" and "give up entirely" because there's no one else to take over as coordinator.

To answer your OP - partially yes. One of the reasons I stopped doing athletic training was because I wanted to start a family and the hours were insane (70-80 hours a week regularly, sometimes pushing 100 during playoffs). There were other issues as well so time wasn't the only factor.

In your situation, is there anyway they would be willing to compensate you for more of your time? Would you be willing to do the job if you were compensated? That may be the reason they have so much trouble filling the position b/c they are not providing adequate compensation for the job. Even if you do not stay in the position, maybe they would be willing to listen to your input and up the pay so someone else would take it. That way you could stay on and just teach. Just a thought.
