cyndyinohio
I'm trying to decide on my son's history and have narrowed it down to Sonlight 100 or Notgrass American History. I wondered if one was better than the other for preparing him to pass the American History CLEP? Thanks!

Lori D.
No personal experience with CLEP exams to help you, but it sounds like whichever program you use, you also *really* need to use multiple additional materials specifically designed for helping with the CLEP, plus take practice tests. Tohru
Have you looked at what the American History Clep covers? That might help. We considered Sonlight 100 for American History, but then decided that I just didn't like it. My son reads so much as it is and every year that we've ever done Sonlight, he hasn't retained very much. He does better with smaller amount of sources and more depth, so personally I'd go with Notgrass, however I've never seen it.

smilesonly
I agree with Lori. We are using SL Core 100 this coming fall for 9th gr., but that is because my dh dislikes Notgrass-otherwise NG would be my 1st choice.:) On the SL boards I have read of dc using Core 100 and passing the CLEP-so it can be done. Good luck!
Teresa in MO
My dd took the American History 1 test a few years back (probably 5 years ago, time flys!) her best prep was the REA American History CLEP prep book. You might want to purchase this book and see which one lines up most with that.

smilesonly
What does your daughter dislike about Notgrass? I've never used it before. My dd does like it. It's my dh(hubby) that doesn't. Dd actually was excited when I told her that was one of *my* top pics, but dh feels NG is too conservative. He chose SL, and really, we are all excited. I do have NG-envy though!:D

I was hoping my son would have a strong opinion one way or the other, but he said he'd like both. I wonder how much of a time difference there is between the two? That might make a difference. Greta Lea
Of course, this is obviously not a one year program, but it would prepare a student very well for the American History I and II CLEP test.

I was going to check that out...thanks for the reminder. They put a schedule up and a book list, right? Is this something you have personally done and liked? Greta Lea
Last year my son really, REALLY wanted to study 20th cent. history. I started using Year 11 lite very loosely, but by the end of the year we had incorporated more and more from the Year 11 lite. Here's what he read from Year 11 lite... History: -A History of the Twentieth Century: The Concise Edition of the Acclaimed World History by Martin Gilbert -The Men Behind Hitler by Bernhard Schreiber (online here) -The Trial at Nuremberg (one short essay online here) -The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom -When Character Was King by Peggy Noonan (20 chapters) ALL the speeches Government & Econ: -Whatever Happened to Penny Candy -Whatever Happened to Justice (Both of these are Year 7 & 8 government and econ books. We are doing this part in order) Geography: -The World: Travels by Jan Morris (he did NOT like this at all...dropped it within a few weeks) Literature The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald (Started this...HATED it...read Lord of the Flies...his choice...instead) The Chosen by Chaim Potok Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury (3 parts) To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee Short Stories Young Goodman Brown by Nathaniel Hawthorne The Fall of the House of Usher by Edgar Allen Poe How Much Land Does a Man Need? by Leo Tolstoy The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County by Mark Twain The Open Window by Saki (Hector.H. Munro) The Open Boat by Stephen Crane I'm a Fool by Sherwood Anderson Essays Abortion and the Conscience of the Nation by Ronald Reagan He LOVED it!! We both can't wait to begin Year 9 lite (with some substitutions from the regular Year 9 list) this fall! HTH
