Scholars Online is AWESOME

Recommended Posts

Hey, I just wanted to give major kudos to these folks:

http://www.scholarsonline.org/Info/index.php

We just finished their high school British Literature course and were very, very pleased. My spouse and I are both English majors, and our standards are very high, which is one of the reasons we're homeschooling.

We were NOT disappointed in the slightest. Scholars Online provided a thorough, complete understanding of English literature grounded in a solid understanding of the historical context that gave rise to the various traditions, genres, and styles of English literature. (I have an M.A. in English from a good university, and I ended up learning a great deal more than I ever knew about the "big picture" topics of history, genre, and style.)

The course was laid out clearly and thoroughly, and the instructor's tests fairly assessed the material. Interaction took place in chats which you could print out and review later. I never would have thought of that as being a major advantage, but WOW, it was! How useful it was to say, "Now, what exactly did Dr. McM say about the multiple narrative personas of Chaucer in The Canterbury Tales? How did he put that??"

It is a Christian organization, but speaking as someone not particularly religious, it was by no means obtrusive. It was present in the appropriateness of the selections for young students, the courtesy that was modeled by the instructor, and in the honesty expected of the students. I would recommend it for anyone regardless of religious affiliation or lack thereof.

We will definitely be taking more classes with them again. In addition to literature, they also teach Latin, science, and other courses as well. They are provisionally accredited, which means that credit should transfer or be applicable toward a HS diploma, if need be.

If anyone has any other questions, feel free to reply or PM. I am very, very happy and want to spread the word.

Note: We are not employed by Scholars Online or any affiliate of theirs. We're not being paid or recompensed in any way, shape, or form.

Thanks for the review. Their course offerings look very interesting. I'm going to have to investigate further.

Btw, Charles Wallace, did you ever find a writing program you like? I thought you were looking into a few.

Thanks for the info:001_smile: So it sounds like this resource could be used by secular homeschoolers as well. Is that correct in your opinion?

Yes. Not being super-religious, I was a little leery of it at first in that regard, but I was impressed by the way it was handled. Religion was discussed factually (e.g., "Henry VIII became head of the Church in England") and non-dogmatically. Values were modeled by example -- that is, the professor who led the class modeled respect, integrity, and tolerance. In short, I would recommend it to anyone regardless of religious persuasion, because whether you personally are quite religious, not very religious, not Christian or what have you, I think it would be fine.

Not quite yet. The Brit Lit course really concentrates on literature, not writing. Scholars Online does offer some writing, so we're thinking of looking into that. Thank you for asking!:D
