Creating a blog ~ How to get started?

Recommended Posts

I have been mulling over the idea of starting a blog for a long time now. I am thinking I might actually do it, but I have no idea where I should start. I have Photoshop Elements 6, but I have not yet mastered it. Does anyone have a good resource on how to start this from the ground up? Thanks in advance!

I use blogger, I had NO idea what I was doing at first. It's fairly easy though.

They have you select one of their templates, and then you just start adding stuff. My favorite website for seeing how to modify my template is the Dummies Guide. It shows you how to change your layout and such.

Really though, most of them walk you through the process as soon as you sign up.

Hope that helped...

I also use blogger. I just started with the basics, and then I would learn each new thing as I wanted to do it. Changing column size, centering things, adding specific content, etc. - you just google what you want to do, and someone somewhere has the directions for it. It's great.

I used PrintShop to design a banner and some other graphics. You really just save them and then follow the directions to upload them. I am amazed how easy it is. You drag and drop things to move them around the page.

I joined Homeschool Journey. Andrea and Ron are very helpful in answering questions through email and listening to their users wants & needs, and I like it that there are lots of other hs'ers there.

For photos I use Flickr as my photo storage spot and use the url from there to post photos on my blog.

Come take a look at Homeschool Journal!

Like others have said most are pretty easy to use and walk you through the basics. I use WordPress and it is really easy and offers different templates and the like. I also use Flickr to host my photos even though WordPress offers 3GB of space.

When I first started, Blogger was having some issues as it switched so I went with WordPress and then I recently looked to switch to Blogger but I found it not as easy as WordPress. It is kinda like anything else wherever you start and become familiar is easier than what you don't know, kwim. :)

Let us know if you finally take the blogging plunge.

I've had a blog on and off for years. There's blogger, blogspot, wordpress, moveable type, homeschoolblogger, livejournal, facebook, myspace, etc. Decide which type of platform you want to use: a social network like myspace, a hosted blog, or one you host on your own server. Most people start with blogger or blogspot (a hosted blog) and it's fine for most of what people want. There's usually some good tutorials and a lot of it is just playing around. (I crashed my blog last week and it took me a few days to get it back up, so be prepared to be frustrated. :)) Just ask for more information what you decide you're interested in.

another vote for blogger (blogspot), it's very easy to set up...they walk you through the steps and very easy to use. My photos are just normal photos, I am getting elements for my birthday- I am excited to learn how to use it...

jump on into blogging, the water's fine!

I've used HomeschoolBlogger, Blogger, and Wordpress. HSBlogger was the simplest for me to use, but not really very customizable, I thought. Blogger was very easy to use, but I ended up at Wordpress because I like their template selection better. Wordpress was a bit more difficult for me to figure out--for example, I wanted list options down the side of the blog, and it took a few hours of messing with it to figure out how to get them there, and then how to edit them. But once I figured it out, it was a snap. I'm a word girl though--I leave Photoshop to my graphics editors at work, LOL!
