DragonflyAcademy
I just received (bought used) my Phonics Road to Spelling and Reading Level 2.. I have 2 questions. 1. My Little House Study is missing pages i to iv (the framing that details focus points for the chapters (I think)).. Am I screwed? Or can I glean the info from the DVDs? (if so, which ones.. so I can start that before we actually need it.. As far as I can tell, this is the only missing thing.. 2. If I'm having my 10 year old accelerate through this..and he is a very good reader.. Do I just go over rules etc orally (like we did in PR 1) and not worry too much about the writing etc..? My main focus is to get him ready to start PR3 in Sept..I didn't want to just jump in with him with PR3 because his spelling was/is poor (but improving). While he enjoyed PR1 to a degree.. he was also pretty bored..PR2 looks great for my upcoming 2nd grader but I can see him thinking this is also "babyish" Thoughts? I have my 10 year old finishing level 2 now, and we plan on starting level 3 over the summer. We moved quickly through the spelling portion, as she is a natural speller. We covered everything there, including building code sheets, just at a quicker pace, sometimes a list a day. Whatever you're comfort level is there (you know your son). The grammar portion we didn't move as quickly, because it does such a good job laying a strong grammar foundation and I didn't want to rush through it. We still doubled up most days, but I don't know that I'd be able to cover it over a summer. There is a lot of good stuff there, and he'll need it in the later years. good luck, lisa
DragonflyAcademy
Thanks Lisa, did you do the literature study too or skip it? He read Little House a few years ago...
johnandtinagilbert
I would encourage you to do the lit study, not for the sake of the book, but for the sake of applying his spelling into actual writing (as in the subject area of writing). The lit. study is the writing process in action. For spelling, continue to mark each word write in syllables. You'll pick up a few more letter teams in PR2, and you'll want to reinforce those as well. You may not need to practice then spell in the notebook, but I'd be sure to work on the above, that's what makes their minds *think* about spelling. How's your ds' grammar? PR2 gets moving for grammar, so I wouldn't skip it either, unless he's solid in the area. Even then, I'd encourage learning the definitions from PR. They seem to be a little more explicit than other programs we've used and will be built upon (by adding more details) in PR3. Another important part of the program will be the dictation you get in the grammar portion. This not only works on writing skills, but also applies spelling, and using sentence parsing, reinforces grammar. You may choose to complete level 2 in any order, but I'd encourage you to read through it and Use what will benefit your ds. Level 2 is a lot more than level 1. DragonflyAcademy
If anyone knows which CDs have the lists for the Little House study that would normally be on page i through iv, please let me know.. These pages are the only ones i'm missing and i need to compile that info for when we start. Thanks!

DragonflyAcademy
I'm very excited to start.. My son, who is 10, said to me the other day as we were wrapping up PR1.. "Mom.. spelling makes so much more sense to me now... before it was just jumbled rules and no one explained them.. now.. I get it.." Speaks volumes.. volumes.. Wish I had started this right when we pulled him from public school.. instead of stumbling around for 1 1/2 years...
