Margo out of lurking
I'm looking for a hotel close to Dulles. We have to be at the airport by 7:30 a.m. I don't want to get stuck in commuter traffic. How close to the airport should I stay? I'm trying to find a balance between cost and convenience . . . Thank you!
bettyandbob
Where do you live. If I lived anywhere in the DC area, I'd just have everything packed and roust everyone at 5 am (my ds would sleep in his clothes for this). Traffic moves east. If you stay in Herndon or Reston you would be traveling west to the airport so your commuter traffic would be minimal. I would expect a 20 minute drive from either Reston or Herndon, maybe less, but then you have to factor in dropping a rental car or long term parking. If you have no vehicle, almost all hotels in Reston/Herndon have a shuttle that will take you to the airport (ask). You might also consider Chantilly. I can't give you traffic times on 28, but I think it's a bit slower (not a lot) going north on 28 than going east on 267 (Reston/Herndon) in the morning.
