To Test or Not to Test?

Recommended Posts

I've been pondering whether or not to do annual testing of DD7. This is my first year HSing, and I guess I am wanting to establish a benchmark. I'm a goal-oriented type of gal so I like to be able to see where we are, where we've been, and where we need to be. I live in GA and the law requires only standardized testing in grades 3, 6, 9 & 12. I'm not concerned with the law; I'm most concerned with having a way to document where DD was at the end of each school year. I would not submit them to the state or anything, just keep them in my files. Any thoughts on whether this is a good idea?

We're doing the Stanford 10 at a local administration just to get a baseline and to provide some documentation that DD has, indeed, completed a year of school. I'm confident that she's doing fine, that she's learning, and that she's growing, but should I die tomorrow, she'd have to go back to school, and I think she'd be happier if she could go back to school next fall as a 2nd grader, instead of having to do 1st grade again due to her birthdate.

At 7 is she in 2nd grade? You would have to test next year anyway. You really couldn't go wrong either letting her wait one more year or in letting her have a practice test (for the purposes of documentation) this year. Just don't make the test more important than it is. These tests are good for seeing general trends of how they are doing compared to their peers.
