Downsides of Skipping the PSAT?

Recommended Posts

My son will be in the 11th grade next year and we will be traveling during the PSAT. Other than not being able to compete for the National Merit Scholarship, what will be the downsides of missing the test. Given his scores last year I would expect him to get in the high 190s or low 200s. It's not out of the range of possibilities for him to get a qualifying score, but I sincerely doubt that he would.

Also, is there some other way to take the test due to religious conflicts? We are traveling as part of a Holy week.

re: benefits of taking PSAT in 11th grade

Sounds like it may be worth your while as DS might qualify for NMS. The other benefit is that the PSAT is a cheap way to practice for the SAT (about $10-15 for PSAT, compared to the $50+ for SAT). AND the PSAT does not "count against him" -- while taking multiple SAT tests can.

re: some other way to take the test

One thought: can you arrange to have DS take the test while you are traveling, at a school where you will be at that time? The College Board website has a search engine for finding schools which administer the PSAT.

For information about how/when to register check the College Board website; here is a paragraph from the website that might be a starting point: "If you missed taking the PSAT/NMSQT in your junior year, you may still be able to enter programs conducted by National Merit Scholarship Corporation if you meet other requirements to enter the NMSC competitions (published in the Official Guide to the PSAT/NMSQT and on NMSC's website ). To request information about alternate testing after the October PSAT/NMSQT administration, write to NMSC as soon as possible but no later than March 1 following the PSAT/NMSQT administration that was missed. Your letter must be postmarked on or before March 1 for your request to be considered."

BEST of luck, whatever you decide! Warmest regards, Lori D.

If you think ds has a chance to be a semi or finalist, it could mean big bucks for school. I would check on the timing. It's only given in October, but usually there's a religious exemption or "other" to work around those times.
