Here's what we're doing this year (8th):

English: We were work working in Harvey's Elem. Grammar, but are now using Practical English along with multiple resources for writing

Math: R&S 8

Latin: First Form Latin

French: L'Art de Lire

Science: Physical Science and some nature study lessons (botany)

History: Renaissance & Reformation Times (D. Mills) along with The Portable Renaissance Reader for primary resources+ biographies

Literature: many selections from AO year 8 such as Utopia, Everyman, Shakespeare's sonnets and plays, English Literature for Boys and Girls, Bacon's essays, Fierce Wars and Faithful Loves, etc.

Geography: she independently reads Book of Marvels and we do map work with our history lessons

Art: as connected with Renaissance & Reformation Times and artist studies

Music: through piano lessons and composer studies

She has a few more things she does independently on her weekly assignment sheet but this is most of it.:001_smile:

Next year is still up in the air for my youngest. She may be going to the charter school several of her friends are currently attending, but I think it's more likely that she'll be at home.

If she's at home, I'm not certain about what we'll be using, but this is what I'm leaning towards:

history - SOTW3 and SOTW4 or if not these, then something (video-based maybe?) that covers roughly the same time-period

English - Spelling Power, weekly paper, probably use Glencoe Reader's Choice for lit because she HATES to read things that aren't of her own choosing and this will at least get her exposure to a lot of different things and each selection is pretty short

math - I would love for her to at least try Kinetic Books prealgebra after she finishes MUS prealgebra, but I don't know that I'll be able to convince her to try it. She really doesn't like computer-based math. If I can't convince her, then I'll probably have her work through Algebra I: A Fresh Approach, but pull in pre-algebra review sheets for her to do. If she isn't constantly working with fractions, decimals, percents, ratios, ..., she forgets how to do them.

science - We'll be using the individual texts in the physical science strand of Prentice Hall Science Explorer.

She'll be continuing with her weekly guitar lessons and sewing class. She may pick up a photography class. She would probably also join the Friday co-op for more social time.

==================

what my oldest did for 8th grade

English - SWI-B, Hake Grammar (now renamed as Saxon Grammar), SL Core 7 literature

history - SL core 7

math - Jacobs Algebra

science - Prentice Hall Science Explorer

weekly cartooning class

twice weekly tae kwon do class

=======================

what my middle dd did for 8th grade

English - IEW American history-based writing lessons, SL core 100 literature plus lots of added reading

history - first half of SL core 100 with added readings (was coordinating her with youngest doing SL3-4)

math - Kinetic Books Algebra I

science - Prentice Hall Science Explorer

weekly gymnastics class

twice monthly science co-op

Here's what I'm thinking so far for ds... (And yes, I'm farming out even more this year... I guess I knew that eventually I'd become a manager more than a teacher, but I didn't really expect it to come so soon...)

Math - Algebra 2 with Derek Owens

Science - Physics with Derek Owens

Latin - He's covered all of the basic grammar, so next year will be a translation course with the teacher he has now. I'm happy to pay her money so I don't have to think about what texts to use, etc, etc. :)

Greek - Also with the Latin teacher. She may choose to finish Athenaze, or she may select another text. As long as he's making progress, I don't care. :)

English -

----- grammar - Killgallon Grammar for Middle School for fall, then Stewart English 3 (he's done well with the first two Stewarts, but I thought Killgallon might be a pleasant change of pace for him)

----- analysis - Windows to the World - this one can be done in a semester, but I think we'll just take it easy and let it cover the year for us. He'll be reading a lot of other literature this year, and I want this to be a nice introduction to more advanced analysis without making him analyze every book he reads. He's done LL7/8 and two of the high school courses, but I think this will ask a lot more of him.

----- writing - One Year Adventure Novel - This will be our real focus for English this year. He really wants to do it, and it looks like it will be great fun. I'm hoping the other elements of our English this year will take relatively little time and allow him to really explore his love for writing. He's done several short-story workshops, etc, with a local author and loves it, so I think this will be a hit... He watched the sample dvds and loved it. :)

Logic - I was planning on doing Traditional Logic (1? 1&2?) from MP this year, but I'm also considering CAP's Discovery of Deduction... He has used the other CAP materials -- but I'm not sure which direction that fact sways me...

Music Appreciation - Discovering Music

Small subjects - Christian Studies 3 from MP, art history from Calvert (just planning to have him read through the three books over the year -- he already knows he likes them from reading Painting years and years ago), Sophie's World (intro to philosophy)...

And now, last, but far from least -- in fact, just overwhelming enough for me to put off -- history (and lit)...

History (and lotsa reading!) - We'll be reading selections from Spielvogel's Wester Civilization and Hakim's History of US (all of vol. 6-10). Plus the following reading list which is *not* in any real order and which is *highly* subject to change at this point. :)

Our Century in Pictures for Young People

I will keep you posted. I ordered the screenplay last week and now I need to buy the movie and do more reading. Here's a post from the high school board where the study was discussed. http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=241315&highlight=inception

We chose a new picture every year to use on our schoolwork. Next year we're using a labyrinth.

Bible - I'm doing a survey of world religions using a bunch of videos I already own. I'm also using Bible Prophecy for Blockheads; a Prayer of Jabez devotional for kids; World Faiths: Judaism; Usborne World Religions; How the Bible Came to Us; How the Bible Spread; At Home Daily Devotionals. I'm basically "using up" some resources that have been on my shelf since my older son was this age....

Math - his algebra tutor is looking at an Algebra II book by Brown and another by Dolciani right now in deciding which they will use next year. I will probably do extra work at home using the Videotext algebra I already own to give him extra practice and reinforcement (because she doesn't give them enough homework for the entire week).

Geography - I have some workbooks that he'll complete next year, in addition to our history related work. I also still have some Which Way USA? books for the western states that I may let him work through for fun.

His reading will not be as tied to his history studies as in past years. I've made up a list of potential books for the year.

He'll complete the Easy Grammar Plus book that I started with him this year. I basically divided up the exercises in half. He'll complete the second third of Vocabulary for the College Bound, which he started this year. I am hoping that a higher level writing class is going to be offered by the same lady he works with this year for his writing, as it gives him a break from my critiques and another voice (a good thing at this age) to listen to with regard to writing tips. This child is not my writer child....

He will finish up Latin Primer III and do Latin Grammar I next year.

I believe his Spanish teacher is going to use a Barron's Spanish Now! book that we already own. I will continue at home with the Barron's Spanish Grammar the Easy Way (not really!) book that we own. I'm also going to start using a Learnables CD that I own....

He will probably have to finish up Introductory Logic since I have mostly ignored it this year and hopefully we'll do Intermediate Logic. I am saving Traditional Logic for high school....

He will be studying modern history next year. I continue to put my own stuff together for this and mostly have my reading lists in place already. I need to work on writing prompts....

He will be studying physics next year. I'm waiting to hear from the lady he just started chem labs with about whether she might let him do a physical science lab with her son starting this summer. She also is going to do a physical science lab class at a co-op we attend next school year and I'm hopeful he can take that (it is different in its scope and sequence). I'm looking at several things right now, but really have enough materials and kits at home to cover it here, too, if need be. I just need to throw together a plan.

I'll join in! Here's what I'm thinking right now...of course, subject to continual change! This will be our first year with a lot of online classes.

Bible - Explorer's Quest level (not sure which book though)

LA - Second half of both IEW SICC B and R/S 7, undecided if LL 7 or 8

Latin - Henle 2 at Regina Coeli

Geography - class at TPS (Runkle's Geography) or join in with youngers MFW ECC

Science - Apologia Biology

Math - Geometry - TT or Chalkdust

Computer - course(s) at TPS

Italian - Rosetta Stone

We've got 6 and 7, but what I'm planning for right now is 4/5 and 8...

So how 'bout it? I'm still very much at the work-in-progress phase, but I'd love to see what others are doing, have done, or are planning...

Sigh. Just nudge me towards the finish line, will you, Abbey? :tongue_smilie: This is the latest I have ever been in planning the next year. I have decided that we are moving to a year-round schedule, which will incite a mass rebellion on Swimmer Dude's part. However, I find myself feeling far less stressed with practicing the "Do the next thing" type of planning instead of trying to make everything fit into 36 weeks. Meeting ds's ever-changing needs requires editing on the sly which is difficult with swim meets every other weekend. I am looking at spending 5 weeks on with the sixth week off for planning and rejuvenation.

I am dying to hear how this goes! Please please please keep us posted!

(I hope to be back on later to post my plans, even though at this stage they are changing faster than the weather!)

Grrl! Where have you been? We are in the Earth Science mode. Is there a reason we should head your way?;)

Math: Dolciani Algebra 2, New Mathematical Library books, LOF, Patty Paper Geometry; depending on how long it takes to do Dolciani, AoPS for the summer.

Science: Galore Park Science 2 as a framework fitting in various books, concentrating on Chemistry and Physics. Our science book list this year may rival lit and history.

LA and Lit: MCT 4th level and William and Mary's Utopia. Also, MCT's new lit guides. I'll pick out a good dozen or so novels, separate from the ones in Utopia and MCT and use the Sparknotes and stay a few weeks ahead. We did that this year and it worked really well.

Latin and Greek: Whichever GP Latin DD decides on (SYR 2, or LP 3), and Lingua Latina. I don't know about Greek, yet. We'll finish up GP's this school year.

History: Modern: Spielvogel text along with Drama of American History. I've not begun the book list for the year. I have various books on the Amazon wishlist, but not in any order as of yet. DD reads a lot, so I usually have to adjust our lists every 3 months or so.

Geography: Galore Park 2 and another book that I can't quite remember, but I'm too lazy to search for it atm. I think I heard about it on the High School board.

Logic: unsure (will finish Lewis Carroll's this year), but I have a few things on the wishlist.

Philosophy: unsure (will finish Sophie's World this year), but same as logic.

Art: probably just a basic text, but DD wants to concentrate on sewing and theater make-up; we're doing an art unit this summer while we study the Renn., so not something I'm stressing about

Music:unsure, but I think I want to do a study of classical music.

Shawna, would you please tell me more about the Galore Park materials that you are going to use? Nicole M. lent me some of the history materials and they were very useful.

Have you looked at Discovering Music that Abbey linked in her original post? It looks amazing. Also, this is a decent, affordable middle school art text that you can spread over three years and tie into history, if you are interested.

I've not used the GP history, but only because I couldn't possibly fit in another thing. But, you never know :tongue_smilie:.

We just started the Greek, but from what I can tell it's really just a beginner's guide, which is exactly what I wanted. It's not set up like the Latin materials. DD wants to continue Greek next year, so I've got to check that out somewhere. We've used Latin Prep 1 and 2, then SYR Latin 1 (Latin Prep 2 kicked out butts, so we needed a bit of a break) We're doing Latin Prep 3 now along with Lingua Latina. After Latin Prep 3, she'll have a choice of SYR Latin 2 or 3. The author says to go straight into 3, so that's probably what she'll do.

The geography is quite involved, we could have probably waited another year. It's different than anything I ever did in school. There are different 'case studies' that centers around a real location, such as a volcano, a large city, a rainforest, etc. You study environmental and economic impacts, and study and answer questions about rather detailed maps. It is probably dd's hardest subject. It really makes her think.

The science dd loves. We did the Science 1 in 5th grade I think. Detoured with some other stuff last year, but she begged to get part 2. It's good enough. DD reads many science books (Gallant, Horrible Science, Manga Guides, lots more, :tongue_smilie: ), so that helps stretch it for the two years it's supposed to last. It's not a very difficult text, and I don't know if I'd have chosen it (I was wanting Singapore, but after her elementary years being filled with it, math and science, she wasn't keen), but I think it's enough, especially with all she reads.

I bookmarked Discovering Music and I already had Art in Focus on my 9th grade wishlist (does anyone else do that, separate your Amazon wishlists by grade  ) Since I plan on doing some sort of art unit for the Renn., I'm not too worried. We'll probably do crafty things now that the baby is, well, she'll be four in August :crying: .

This time around, we used:

Foersters for algebra-loved it. We're done now and will use Gelfand and some of the AoPS Geometry book for the rest of the year.

Singapore O-level for chemistry, plus CC high school chem lab-loved this, and he got a lot out of it. Excellent teacher who gave very helpful feedback on his lab writeups.

Writeshop for writing-also excellent. Highly recommended for reluctant but capable writers, moreso for reluctant writing TEACHERS.

R&S grammar-burning out on grammar here! But it's a good program.

Literature ala TWTM

Spanish with an online tutor.

Gave up on Latin-he got bored with it.

Logic-finished CT2 and then he read Thank You for Arguing (more rhetoric than logic, but loved it) and we are doing formal logic now with Gensler's Intro to Logic book. So far so good.

History-Kingfisher plus primary sources, SOTW 4 as a guide

We did an online algebra class through CTY for my last kid-don't recommend this. Tutor was terrible and way too expensive (even with our half off discount). I want to get Latin right with my last kid.

My son is in "8th grade" this year, more or less. He's doing the following:

English - Florida Virtual School 8th grade advanced language arts.

American History - We've flip flopped on this one. He started the year doing a reading list I had made up, then signed up for the FLVS middle school class, then decided he hates it and is now going back to my plan for the rest of the year.

Math - FLVS Liberal Arts Math (high school course)

Science - FLVS Earth Space Science (high school course)

Art - History / appreciation of American artists using various resources I've pulled together. We're also doing a few museum field trips.

Music - 20th century music appreciation course from Duke TIP

Choir / Vocal Performance - He sings with a local boychoir and takes private voice lessons. I've also taken him to two mini-concerts by local classical singers.

That's it this year, as far as what we're "counting" as academics. He's very busy with outside activities, and this is what we can reasonably get done.

I have much to plan/think/go insane over yet..

keeping in mind her that my dd will be coming out of a pvt school and I feel she is below average in some areas

Bible- lifepacs & hoping to buy Polished Corner stones from doorposts

math- Saxon 8/7 (because I have it but I feel she could move past this quickly with a summer to review) Thinking about going into something Alg 1 just not sure.

Science- she is way into biology and her "science 7" she has had seems to have covered a bit so I am thinking about Apologia Gen Science just to touch back to some basics but may go ahead with physical science

Reading/Lit/writing- clueless here, she is a good reader but doesn't like to read and her writing skills are not very strong

She takes Spanish now but this is her 2nd year and I feel like she hasn't learned much at all so clueless here. in all honesty I want us all to learn ASL and my go that route

History- AAH with some beefing up through library books

Music- she will continue with Clarinet and maybe move into sax or oboe we also plan to study a bit on the composers that we play. ( I teach pvt lessons locally so that if nothing else is a good benefit to her lol)

Art- this might not be conventional but I plan to teach her to knit, spin wool, dye wool etc. as well as study the history of knitting and I will add some not knitting related art.

Our 8th grade plans are slowly taking shape. I'm finally to the point that I can make a reasonable post on this thread. :)

Bible: Finish Volume 1 of Balancing the Sword. My ds started reading the Bible through in 4th grade and he will finish in 8th! He will also work through BJU's Bible Truths B and participate in Youth Bible Drill. I am also going to look into Who is God?, a worldview book published by Summit and Apologia (? I think this is correct).

English: I'm a newbie convert to MCT (after hearing him 4 times at convention) so next year I am going to try Magic Lens 1, Word Within a Word 1, and Essay Voyage.

Literature: Lightning Lit 8 and Greenleaf's Guide to Ancient Literature

Math: Jacobs Geometry, continue working in AofPS Introductory Algebra

Latin: Lone Pine Classical School Latin 100

Science: BJU Physical Science

History: BJU World History (just the ancient civilization part) with lots of outside history readings and a few GB added in (see "literature" above). May also try to incorporate some art with God and the History of Art.

We've got 6 and 7, but what I'm planning for right now is 4/5 and 8...

So how 'bout it? I'm still very much at the work-in-progress phase, but I'd love to see what others are doing, have done, or are planning...

OK, I'll admit right up front, I'm posting in this thread because I'm hoping Abbey will comment on my Latin choice. :D

Math: Chalkdust Algebra I

English: R&S 8, SWO H, SWICC C and WTM inspired writing

Science: Apologia Physical Science or Biology (haven't decided on this because she and upcoming 9th grader enjoy working on science together, so I'm thinking about keeping them together...or not)

History: History of the Ancient World

Literature: Greenleaf Guide to Ancient Literature

Logic: Traditional Logic

Latin: First Form and Second Form (She's almost finished with LC II. I realize First Form would be mostly review, but I think she could use the review. This is a very new program, and I haven't seen many reviews, so I'm a little nervous about this choice.)

Oooh, Thank you!!!

Grrl! Where have you been? We are in the Earth Science mode. Is there a reason we should head your way?;)

Seriously, definitely, and distractingly way too busy. I just realized that it was time to begin planning (I feel like the White Rabbit!) and thought I better start checking in.

Is there a reason to head this way? Hmmm... bottles of wine, coconut macaroons from Sweet Life, a view of the Milky Way when you are probably getting rain... yeah, a few very good reasons!

Nothing set in stone in the least...all preliminary.

Oh my goodness. I'm such an idiot. This is an 8th grade thread and I'm going to have a 7th grader. UGH. I've been working nights - I choose to believe I was just too tired LOL. So my post is for a 7th grader, not an 8th.

Just started working on planning - pretty late for me. But I was planning to to hit the Philly convention so I thought I had more time. :glare: I may still make it to CHAP or ENOCH, but I need a plan in case I decide to skip convention shopping and just order stuff....

Well, here is what I am thinking. This is my third time with an 8th grader but I am still trying a lot of new stuff!

Math - switch from TT to Lials BCM. I think it will give me a clearer picture of her strengths and weaknesses before High School.

Reading - lots of books tied to History. In addition, I think we will try some Progeny Press guides. This child HATES discussing her reading (literary analysis discussions did not go well this year!) so I think she will prefer answering all the questions instead.

Writing - probably The Elegant Essay. I was hoping to see several other things but I own TEE and I can make it work.

Spelling and vocab - sticking with what we are using.

Grammar- Although I have been very happy with GWG, I think that I am going to have her use AG next year. My oldest loved it and I especially liked the High School reinforcement books.

German - Feeling ambitious and thinking that she can handle OSU German 1. She convinced me to let her drop Latin and get more serious about German.....I was ok with it as long as she starts a real program right away. My 17yo is in OSU German 3 and thinks Hannah will be fine.

Science - BJU Earth Space. I think. She has handled Life Science pretty well but we hardly did any of the experiments - just a bunch of dissections. Getting the lab kit for this is so pricey...just not sure. I would love to get the DVDs (even more $$$!) but she is not crazy about watching them and then still doing all the work - she feels that science will take even longer than it already does! Bottom line - I really like BJU Science but I don't like the price!

History - We are almost done with Year 4. I want to spend the first semester using Brimwood Press and the next semester doing Geography and then start again with Year one in 9th grade. But what would work for only semester of Geography? I want to focus on Cultural Geography as she'll be doing Earth Science, but most of the texts I have considered are more than I need.

Logic - finish the Bluedorn books and, maybe, start Memoria Press in the 2nd semester. Or maybe save it for 9th grade?

Art - continue local classes. Music - ??? Still don't want to spend for guitar lessons....need to have a serious discussion about school $$$ with my husband.

PE - She's been doing Pilates since she dropped ballet and she is bored. We are discussing some form of martial arts ($$$ again, sigh...). She is also interested in running. Maybe my husband could do a Couch to 5K thing with her? My knees are not up to the running.

Wow - I feel more prepared for next year than I thought!
