s/o How do you find academic competition teams

Recommended Posts

What tips do you have for finding teams for things like First Lego League or Odyssey of the Mind?

We're totally new in the area and we've already missed competing this year. I'm sort of at a loss for how to find teams like this that would welcome homeschoolers.

I'd be willing to volunteer, but would rather not reinvent the wheel.

Most of ours have been by word of mouth. The FLL coach signed her kiddos up for a program I was in charge of and then invited my girls to join her team. MathCounts fell into our lap, too.

You can also go to the state or regional competitions as an audience member and scope things out. ;) We are shopping FIRST Robotics teams for next year that way right now.

You can also look at lists. I know in Ohio (where my kiddos do FLL,) the teams are marked with whether they are school, neighborhood, or homeschool. The neighborhood teams are open to homeschoolers, as well.

You can also ask at your local schools. Sometimes these teams technically fall outside the realm of the school, and so no matter your schools attitude toward homeschoolers, you can join.

We have also done individual contests, and I found those by looking at lists online, competition books, and searching online.

Go to your state's Odyssey of the Mind website. Check out previous year's competing teams. See if there is a homeschool group that competed. Look under every problem and each division (age group.) Then you'll have the name of the group and perhaps you can locate them.

I think we are the only hs group in my state (NJ). I think it is legal for a group to have 5 kids from one group/school and 2 from another group. Therefore your local school might be willing to accept your child onto their team.

Odyssey is a lot of fun! I'm coaching this year.
