Has anyone done parent taught driver's ed in Texas?

Recommended Posts

It is my understanding they are doing away with that program. However, how aggressively "they" are doing so varies widely between offices.

We'll be going to an office 1.5 hours away to have my son take the written test during spring break.

My older brother and sister taught me. My brother is 14 months older than me and my sister is 3 years older than me. I didn't get my license until I was 18, but was taught by my two older siblings who are bad drivers. It took 3 tries for me to pass my test. :glare: Please make sure that whatever method you use, you teach well, make sure your kid understands the rules of the road and that they don't find out from their spouse that it is not legal to turn around in the middle of a city street (though I do it on our residential street multiple times a day). :tongue_smilie:

We are in Texas have been all my life. Up until a few years ago there was a lot less to do with teaching a child to drive. The legislature changed all that.

We signed DD up for Drivers Ed at a driving school after I talked to a friend that did the parent taught way,. Every time she went up to the DPS she never had the right forms, or something was always missing. Plus training her daughter drove her nuts.

We still have to be with DD when she drives 20 hrs on the road with us, 10 at night and 10 during the day.

but we do save some hassle of her taking the test at the DPS , she takes it at the driving school , the permit test and eye test. Then we just take the papers and her birth certificate and SS card.

I am scared for her because of the way people drive around here. They are horrible.

Plus there is graduate drivers license. So you pay for the permit , then the Provisional license and then the one when they turn 18 so they stick it to you three times.

DH will be doing most of the training after Drivers school. I may sit in the back seat to see how she does but it may take me awhile to ride with her by myself. I trust her but I do not want to be making her uncomfortable either.

My sister, who is a Sr. in HS right now just did this. She did an online program that was very much work on her own. She had to spend so many hours on it. I can find out what it was that she did. She just got her permit 2 days ago. :001_smile:

I was very glad I didn't have to do this!

We use 'Help for the teenager who wants to drive' from the National Driver Training Institute. It is an approved course in Texas. The student completes training online, then the parent uses a list of skills to teach each unit's driving skills. My husband is the drving teacher, with one graduate, one in training, and one still to go.

We wait until 16 to get the permit, and until 17 to get the license. Traffic is very heavy here in the DFW area. As the training progresses I ride with the student on routine trips. He is currently driving to and from church, as we don't need to go on the highway.

Google them to find the website, and find out the pricing. It is a lot less than Driver's Ed in a Box.

There are a lot different courses at education4drivers.com . What programm to choose will depend on the amount of money you have and whether you are a confident computer user. Online drivers ed courses for Texas usually cost less than the CD-ROM counterparts; however, when you purchase the CD-ROM based course, you get to keep it and you can have your friends retake it. With the online course, it is one student per one account and there is no way around this.

You may choose to take a Texas free permit test which will allow you to evaluate your current level of knowledge and prepare you for the drivers license or learners permit test at the DPS.

I am in the middle of this for the second time. Here is what we do. You have to submit an approval to texas for a Parent Taught Drivers Ed approval Packet, it's $20. Then we used National Driver Training as recommended by My Fathers World. You do the first part of the learning online, and study for your drivers test. Then they go to your local DPS, and take the written portion of the test. If they pass they get a permit and you start the driving portion of your training. You log hours of driving, then they go back to DPS and take the driving portion of the exam before they get the official license. We were very pleased with NDT.
