nukeswife
My dd is a struggling reader, so we've let writing fall to the wayside, my dh suggested that since she's recently made a huge leap in her reading (she finally read the 1st Magic Tree House book with very minimal help) that we bring writing back in. So I pulled out WWE 1 and started her on week 5 (we'd done weeks 1-4 multiple times in the past) and here's her first narration on The Frog Prince, by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, translated by Edgar Taylor and Marian Edwardes. She seemed was a little long winded, I wrote it out for her and she copied it onto the WWE page. Even though she used the lines as wide lined paper instead of the 1st grade paper it's intended to be, she ran out of room and ended up writing on the back of the page. Should I reign her in a bit or does this seem ok. One day a princess went out for a walk in the woods. She sat down at a stream to rest, and was playing with her favorite toy, a golden ball. She threw it so high, she missed catching it, and it rolled into the stream. A frog came up and asked why she was crying. The princess told the frog, so the frog asked for a few things, and went into the water to get the golden ball. When the princess got her ball, she forgot about the frog, and ran back home. EKS
This narration looks absolutely wonderful to me. But I don't worry about the restrictions WWE places on narrations. If your daughter is a struggling reader, I would doing everything I could to encourage her writing because so often struggling readers go on to become struggling writers. There is NOTHING wrong with what she did here.
Catherine
Agree. I think it's excellent, especially given her difficulty with reading and lack of much prior experience writing. Kudos!
