swimmermom3
The Crusades 1095-1291 (from Kingfisher History Encyclopedia, pp. 148-149) I. In 1095, Pope Urban II called on Christians to go on a crusade to free Palestine from Muslim rule. A. Knight and peasants set out, led by Peter the Hermit and Walter the Penniless. B. Most never reached Palestine, and the rest became a wild, hungry mob. C. In 1099, disciplined crusaders recaptured Jerusalem, while massacring all the inhabitants, and founded for Latin states. II. In 1187, Saladin defeated the Christians at Hattin and reclaimed Jerusalem. A. Then in 1191, England's Richard I led an army to the Holy Land, but was unable to recapture Jerusalem. B. Soon, Saladin signed a treaty with the crusaders to share to share the Holy Land. C. The remaining crusades were failures. D. Palestine was eventually conquered by the sultan of Egypt. (I had a problem in transferring the format. Lines with "inhabitants" and "recapture" were indented.)
