A. Knight and peasants set out, led by Peter the Hermit and Walter the Penniless.

B. Most never reached Palestine, and the rest became a wild, hungry mob.

II. In 1187, Saladin defeated the Christians at Hattin and reclaimed Jerusalem.

A. Then in 1191, England's Richard I led an army to the Holy Land, but was unable to recapture Jerusalem.

B. Soon, Saladin signed a treaty with the crusaders to share to share the Holy Land.

C. The remaining crusades were failures.

D. Palestine was eventually conquered by the sultan of Egypt.

(I had a problem in transferring the format. Lines with "inhabitants" and "recapture" were indented.)
