JennifersLost Posted May 1, 2008 Share Posted May 1, 2008 I'm trying to get on top of my record-keeping for this year. Ds15 was in public school the first semester. This semester we started out with the idea we'd do some formal schooling and some "unschooling". I actually had great plans for earth science, linking ds' studies to the local geology, but we completely blew it. Every activity I tried to initiate was met with real resistance. As a result he's done some textbook reading, website perusing, read half a book on climate change in the arctic, watched a couple of movies he deemed totally lame.... The real problem is that we've studied earth science to death. This is a kid who watched every volcano movie ever made before second grade, played with all those rock id kits in third grade....we did an entire earth science kit that was supposed to be for ninth grade back in fourth or fifth grade.... I can't blame him for not wanting to do it again just to say we did it. But he doesn't have nearly enough "hours" this year to make a science credit. As of now he plans to finish the text book, use some websites to study more concepts and take back versions of the NY regents exam until he gets an 80% or better. WWYD? I spent all morning looking through "science kits" online to find something hands-on he could do but there's nothing we haven't done already. How would you handle this situation? Maybe make him do a paper or two, or teach a class on geology to a group of younger kids--surely he could spend a few hours preparing for that. There are some cool cooking projects I just unearthed that demonstrate the 3 major kinds of rocks (igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic)--I can send them in some form to you for him to use, if you want. He could even do a 3 day "geology camp" for neighbor kids--charge $10 for 2 hours each day, and put that knowledge to use! No. But I have this horrible vision of ds sitting in a college interview and the person asking him, "So.....describe your ninth grade earth science course for me." Ds: "Uhhhh - I read a textbook?"
