Possibly bringing ds home from hs next year, help!?

Recommended Posts

Our oldest ds/15 is having some depression issues and other issues related to some problems that I have had in the past. Long story, but we have no contact with my side of the family because I was abused by them as I was growing up. Anyway, he is now realizing what this all entailed and it's really eating at him. I am also wondering if maybe they have done something to him. He will be seeing my counselor today to talk things out, because he has threatened to kill himself.

I am considering asking him if he feels the need to come home next year. If we do that, it would mean that he stays home until he graduates because where I live they dont' recognize home education credits.

I don't want to use any kind of computer or video type curriculum, so what are my options here? What kind of grading system do I use, record keeping, credits, ect....You get the picture. My oldest went to hs; so I was spared this for her.

I just need lots of help here if this is what he wants or we believe this would be best.:confused::confused::confused:

First: Many prayers on the personal/emotional issues.:grouphug:

On high school: You have many options. If you want a correspondence school (they "do it all"), check into American School. http://www.americanschoolofcorr.com/

They've been around is 1897, are very affordable, are accredited. . .Cafi Cohen used them for her dc, while adding in additional credits.

If you prefer Christian, check CLASS http://www.homeschools.org/whatIsCLASS/index.html

If you want to do your own picking & choosing grab the Rainbow Resources or CBD catalog & you'll see how many options there are. If you want to do all subjects by one publisher, many have their own academy (BJU, AO, etc) & they'll do all the record-keeping stuff. Otherwise, you can browse all the threads re: transcripts, grading, etc. :)

If your ds is able, both emotionally & academically, you can start dual-enrollment @ the cc.

Thank you!!! I know about RR and other homeschooling catalogs, but was wondering more about specific curriculum that you use.

No problem, I can help with what I would like for him to use. First of all, right now he says "no" to coming home but in the end my dh and I will make the final decision.

I do not want a "boxed" curriculum, these are so bland imo and boring. I don't want him to be using a lot of workbooks, but I know some will be needed depending on the subject. I want a hands-on science curriculum with lots of experiments and comes from a Christian world-view, probably Apologia is what I am going to use for that.

Language arts is a tougher subject for me to think about. I know I will probably be resigned to using a workbook approach with this, but if there's some other alternative let me know. I don't have a clue what to use in this area. This would also include writing. I have heard alot about IEW and we have used Writing Strands, but I have no clue what would be best for highschool and what will prepare him for college.

He has already completed Algebra 1 and Geometry for math. He loves math and does very well at it; so I need something that is challenging for him and that will make him think.

That's enough to think about for now...Let me know your thoughts.
