Veterans: Anyone finished Level 4 of Phonics road (or Close to)?

Recommended Posts

1. Can you tell me what the expected outcome after finishing PR?

2. Were your children motivated to do their work or did you have to "drag them kicking and screaming" :)?

3. My concern is that it is boring or confusing. Is that true?

4. What should be my expectations coming into this curriculum?

5. Did you use additional reading for your children?

6. Is this really a comprehensive Language arts curriculum?

7. Which type of homeschool mom would be successful using this program?

8. Would you use this again?

Just wanted to get the advice from a veteran homeschooler before I "commit" to this curriculum! :tongue_smilie:

Join the Latin Road Yahoo group. There are some there :)

I have just about finished Level 3, and have dc in high school now, who didn't use it, so I can compare based on what they missed and what the others have gained using PR.

1. Can you tell me what the expected outcome after finishing PR? Head into high school level writing, grammar, and Latin.

2. Were your children motivated to do their work or did you have to "drag them kicking and screaming" :)? Never kicking and screaming over here.

3. My concern is that it is boring or confusing. Is that true? Actually, it's not at all confusing, in fact, it's crystal clear. It's not jump and down Yippee it's time for spelling, but it is, "Please can we do our literature first?"

4. What should be my expectations coming into this curriculum? You watch the DVD; you teach to your children; they become better at spelling, grammar, reading and writing! Be prepared that you are a part of all they do in Levels 1 and 2, with some independence available by Level 3 & 4 (I've started planning it).

5. Did you use additional reading for your children? Yes, through science and history assignments and they read for pleasure. If you mean is it necessary for instruction, no; however, the more they read, the better their fluency. Dr. Suess books did the fluency trick for my youngest (who struggled most with reading).

6. Is this really a comprehensive Language arts curriculum? TOTALLY!

7. Which type of homeschool mom would be successful using this program? One who teaches. This is not a "hand your kid a workbook" program. You have to engage yourself and your student. Charlotte Mason gentle (although formal grammar earlier than CM); Classical approach; Traditional Grammar; Unit Studyish in that the literature will comprise so much of the application of spelling, reading, writing and grammar.

8. Would you use this again? It's the only thing I'll ever use again and I'm in my 12th year of home schooling.

I'm a vet and I find it the most comprehensive program I've ever used (or seen), in any subject matter, with outstanding teacher training and outstanding benefits from students. It's amazing. Every time someone here says, "I can't believe I didn't find this sooner!" I smile b/c I felt exactly the same way!
