Brindee
My dd is doing Biology as a 9th grader this year. I was going to have her do Chemistry next year as a sophomore. However, she's struggling with some of the Algebra concepts right now. Also, dd is rather musically minded/talented. We heard of a Christian school that has a strong music program--Choir, orchestra, music lessons for her instruments (piano, voice, and possibly violin [she used to take violin and was in a Homeschool Orchestra]). The academics there are strong, and they have a great science teacher. We are looking at it as a possibility for her Junior and Senior year. This school offers Chemistry in the Junior year, and with such a great Chem. teacher, I'd love her to have the opportunity to take it from him if she does end up there! So, with all that in mind, what science would be good for dd to do next year in between the Biology and Chemistry (keeping in mind her struggles with Algebra)? (Even if she stays home, I'm going to wait and do Chem in her Junior year.) Thank you for any insight you can give me! Winterpromise has an Anatomy and Forensics course that we are actually using this year---one semester Anatomy, one semester Forensics. Brindee
Okay, I found this on the school website: 10th Grade Science: This course covers aspects of cell and genetic biology, electricity and magnetism, radioactivity, geology, and chemical properties and reactions. DD says the other stuff sounds very cool, but as we talked about it, we thought maybe we should go with doing as much of the same idea for science as the school does. (More likely to be accepted) They do Physical science with some extras in 9th grade. Anyone know a curriculum that covers these topics and what it's called? Seems like a mishmash of different sciences. Would I need to pull things together to cover these topics? I'm one that prefers it all laid out if possible, since sciences are not my strong point. Teachin'Mine
I was going to recommend physical science if she hasn't already done that, but I see you've already come up with that idea. :) Apologia has a great physical science course. I would strongly suggest this or another physical or integrated science course which will get her up to speed with the math she'll need for chemistry. I think it would be much harder to do a chemistry course, other than conceptual, without having some exposure to significant digits and other math concepts first. Even if it's challenging for her, she'll be able to move at her own pace and be up to speed before beginning school there. Here's a link for Apologia Physical Science. However, I know that some places consider that an 8th grade level course, not high school, so I'm thinking we may not want to chance that? I will be looking into the other things as well, since they match up with what they do in 10th at the school. Thanks again, you gals are awesome! Mostlyamom You're right, a lot of history! She IS doing World History next year. She did Ancient History this year. Not sure she'd want to delve that deep into history for a science course, but she might. The teacher seems very reasonable/personable! What I didn't find was the cost. How much does this class cost? The school she's looking at requires the 4 years of science, so we couldn't skip.....though I really like the idea of doing that and taking an AP Music Theory or a course like it! Brindee we used the course last year. It's not a fluffy course and contains the topics they cover in 10th grade. It's also not light on math, so would probably be a bit challenging. I think it's an excellent text to use before chemistry or physics. It's often used as a 9th grade course, but it makes no difference that you've done biology in 9th and would use this in 10th. You can use the DIVE Integrated Science along with this text if you need a DVD as well. I think it's definitely enough for credit for 10th grade. Honestly, I don't think the general science course would meet the requirements.

You can use any of the syllabuses they provide (including one for just reading from the internet) or if you have another book you prefer they will make you a syllabus. I emailed and they had me send a pdf of the table of contents of the book (I scanned it) and they sent me a syllabus. He was very helpful. For PH, I have the Test Generator CD and it is the best thing since sliced bread. However, I got my whole PH set (student, teacher, lab & test gen) used from the FS board for $70. Brindee
So, I buy the DIVE CD, but I just print out the syllabus from the site? I looked at his little vid explaining the DIVE CDs, and he said the DIVE CD is the main component, and the other is just the source. AND, that the Internet is actually what you can get the most/best/deepest info. from. DD says she doesn't care which, so we may try the DIVE CD with the Internet and see how that goes! Cheaper that way too! If it doesn't work, I can get one of the other books... Soooo, this is what I'm thinking we'll be doing for science next year! Thank you everyone for your help! I appreciate it immensely!!!
