Melissa in CA
I am looking for something for a 17 yo Christian boy. Something he and his dad can read and discuss together. I have looked at Every Man's Battle and Every Young Man's Battle, and to be honest, they seem very inappropriate; too much mental visual stimulation from descriptive confessions. This is not what we are going for! :001_huh: I am currently looking at a book by Joshua Harris...I believe the title is Sex is not the problem, lust is. Can anyone recommend it, or another appropriate book that I am not aware of? Thanks!
Tami
the Passport to Purity kit? It is a wonderful kit to be done with a parent at a week-end away. Highly recommended!
kathleen
Boy, I agree about Every Young Man's Battle. Way too explicit! I like Not Even a Hint by Josh Harris, though it has a new name now that I'm not thrilled with. Something with "lust" in the title. Oh...yes, that's the one you are talking about! It's very good. sarahli
I read "I kissed dating goodbye" by Josh Harris when I was 19, it changed a lot of my views on relationships. I haven't read the others by him, but I would recommend his writing.
Nestof3
My oldest son really enjoyed Jonathan Lindvall's series on scriptural romance as well. He has articles on his website. This is a non-dating approach (similar to how we raise our sons), which may be too conservative for some. http://boldchristianliving.com/
Nissi
Although, I haven't read Josh Harris's book "Sex is not the Problem, Lust is" several families in our church have read this and recommend it highly. Other books he has written are very good. Here are some of his titles: "I Kissed Dating Goodbye", "Boy meets Girl", and "Stop Dating the Church." Melissa in CA
Thank you everyone! I have found a few books that I will recommend to them. *The Joshua Harris book, which also has a study guide. *The Purity Principle by Randy Alcorn *Fatal Attraction by Jack Hayford These all looked pretty good. I am NOT a big Hayford fan, but the topics he touches on sound pretty appropriate. This young man has already dabbled in pornography and it looks like it may be becoming a problem for him. The father has asked us for some guidance in what to do to get to the heart of the problem. Punishment isn't working for the long haul. If you have any other advice to offer them, or books, please let me know. We will be meeting with the father this Friday. Thanks again. sarahli
I'd suggest a good internet filter like Bsafe, with only one family member knowing the password. DH and I have been in a college environment for the past 6 years and everyone that we've talked to that has struggled with this finds the filter to be the best solution. SheWhoWaits
I highly recommend Elisabeth Elliots's Passion and Purity I have given this book to my son, my nephew (who called it a "godly book"), and my neice. I think they were all helped by it. I also like Russell Kelfer's message entitled Be Ye Holy. It's available free of charge on audiotape or CD from Discipleship Tape Ministries. http://www.dtm.org/ It's lesson #913 What I aim for in reproductive education, as in everything, is the heart of God. If my children can be taught to love God and His word, I believe behavior will become self-correcting. That's my goal anyway. I also love what one of my friends said in a discussion about a young lady in her church who has had a lot of life issues caused by her promiscuity: "By doing things God's way, I set myself up for blessing." And she does have one of the happiest families I know. So that's what I want my kids to get.
Captivated
We read "Pure Excitement" by Joe White. I thought it was really great.
Carol in Cal.
But..."I Loved a Girl" is really, really good. It is a correspondence between a pastor and a young man about SP, and I believe that the author's name is Trobisch.
