kristavws
We have always used Singapore, and supplemented with Horizons. We have had good results with this combo, but I am wondering if it would be better to supplement Singapore 5 A/B with Life of Fred next year. My son will be a 5th grader next year. Thanks, Krista
Ali in OR
Do them all! Okay, not for everyone, but we're actually doing that this year. We do not do all of a Horizons lesson because we just use it for review/standardized test prep. So it amounts to about 1/2 lesson per day. We do 1 Singapore lesson a day. After a major unit we do the challenging word problems, about 2 pages per day. Then after one or two units, dd gets a break from Singapore and does a section of Life of Fred Fractions. It will take us all year to do the one book. But she is enjoying it and I think likes that break from Singapore. I think we'll do the same thing next year with the LoF Decimals and Percents book. Sunshine State Sue
Do them all! We have always used Singapore, and supplemented with Horizons. If it's not broke, why fix it? What appeals to you about LoF over Horizons? I don't know a thing about Horizons. We mostly used MUS and supplemented with Singapore's CWP. But, let me share with you my experience with LoF (the year after we finished CWP 6). I had heard so many good things about LoF that I just had to try it. I now wish I hadn't wasted his/my time. It didn't fit my ds's learning style at all. You can read my review here, fwiw. Now, I'm certainly not saying that LoF isn't the best decision for your ds. I just wonder if it's the hype (like it was for me) or if you really think that it would challenge him in a new and different and better way. Edited January 7, 2011 by Sue in St Pete
Guest Cheryl in SoCal
We've used Horizons 1 - 5 and LOF Fractions - PreAlgebra. IMHO there is no comparison. Horizons taught my children how to "do" math and was very rote in it's style. LOF teaches them how to think and use math in real life. If I could take back any one curriculum it would be Horizons. We don't use LOF by itself, yet. At present we use it with MUS but will likely end up with just LOF once we hit Statistics.
