crosspost: what to use after CLE math 800

Recommended Posts

Hi, I need help deciding what to use for dd after she is done with CLE 800. She turned 12 last week and would start CLE 800 in January. She has done 600 and 700, prior to that she did Singapore k-5b and lof. She would like to stay with something that looks like CLE.

We school yr round and also do kumon center math.

Has anybody made the transition to other programs?

Any idea when sunrise algebra 1 would be out?

She should be done with 800 by the start of the next school yr. Thanks, I tend to over think things and get paralised planned and looking at all possible options :001_smile:

I am planning to move my daughter into Saxon once we are finished with CLE. From what I understand, Saxon is the most similar to CLE. I know that CLE Algebra is being tested right now but I don't think it will be available for a couple of years yet. It will probably be out by the time my daughter is ready for it, but we will still use Saxon because there is no way CLE's Algebra 2 will be ready in time for her at the rate they are moving. From what I understand, it is not so easy to jump into Saxon Algebra 2 if you haven't used their Algebra 1.

We are in a similar boat. My dd is doing the 800 series and will be ready to start Algebra next fall. We have done CLE all the way through. It has worked well for us, but it's time to do something new now.

The CLE Algebra won't be out by then. So, we are looking at various Algebra texts.

We like Life of Fred and might do that. With the workbook, I think it is a full program.

We looked at Saxon since that is similar to CLE. However, in my research, I found that while Saxon showed good progress in the 1-8 range, there wasn't much evidence to show that it worked better in the upper level math. And many math teachers and students don't like the way it jumps around. So, we might not do Saxon.

Art of Problem Solving looks like an excellent program for gifted students. It probably wouldn't work for an average student though. Designed for real mathy kids who enjoy math and are very good at it.

Jacobs is an Algebra text that some people like. It tries to make math more interesting, but still has good coverage.

For Algebra and up, many people like to have a video or dvd along with the text, where a teacher explains the material, rather than just learning from a book.

Sounds like you want to continue with a CLE-like program, with workbooks. Key To Algebra is one such program. It's probably too light to use alone, without supplementing though. Some people use it to start Algebra, then move to another program afterwards.

We have ruled out Teaching Textbooks, I think. People like it, but it doesn't seem rigorous enough for us.

Best wishes to you.:tongue_smilie:

I am helping with the field testing of CLE's Algebra 1. They are hoping to have it ready in 2013. I don't know what we are going to do after Algebra 1. I'm kind of on the fence between Saxon and TT. I definitely want something with a "teacher" and I really like that I can get the solutions on computer for either of these.
