Karie
I'm trying to decide history for this upcoming year with a 7th and 5th grader. We are doing middle ages/reformation this year, so I want to go into Exploration-1850's. I've never done something like MFW before. I've done SOTW and this year History Odyssey middle ages with my older son. I need something more planned out for me, and I want to make sure there is enough reading and writing in this program. I actually have quite a few of the books that MFW requires already, so I don't need to buy much except a few books, the Teacher manual and student pages. Also, do I need to buy a set of student pages for each child? I'm just curious how this went for you as far as scheduling, intensity (I like history, but I don't want our school to be ALL about history), and so on. Could you give me your feedback...pretty please?? Thanks!

Rosyl
Ill have a 7th grader using the same mfw program next year. the only question I can answer is that you need to buy a set of student sheets for each student.
Omma
I just received the RtR TM and I don't need to buy separate student sheets because I can just copy them from the Appendix. The newer edition of the TM may require separate student sheets, so I think you will have to check the edition of the TM you purchase to know whether you'll need them or not. I look forward to hearing other replies :lurk5:, as I have used the younger grades only for MFW and I supplemented with other materials at that time. Nowadays I am looking forward to a streamlined approach to school and I realize that there is PLENTY of material in the RtR TM since SOTW is scheduled for you and SOTW and the RtR TM have extensive book lists itemized for you for each chapter. I love our interlibrary loan system and will be using it extensively :D!! So there is plenty of reading material available. And MFW gives daily (or at least weekly) recommendations for adding history notebook pages for your student(s). I'm really excited about the prospects of using MFW again, anyway! One big draw for me is how the Bible integration is so relevant to what is being studied each week, in a way that is (at times) convicting, encouraging, and instructive. I love the cohesiveness of history, Bible, science, music and art. Oh, and I am right behind you with a soon to be 6th grader and 5th grader, so your plan for Exp. to 1850 sounds great to me! :grouphug:, Brenda
3Rivers
We are using MFW this year with a 4th and 7th grader. I am SOoooooo pleased. This is our 5th year homeschooling and I can finally say I'm done looking for curriculum. It is very user/mom-friendly esp. for combining grades. It has been VERY easy to drop things when I needed to without totally losing ground in the whole schedule. It is very full, very complete and very rich. I agree that each student needs their own student sheets. MFW was correct in that -- that was the one thing I wish I had done from the beginning b/c I ended up buying a second set. I love this curriculum!!! It has been a long and frustrating journey, which is probably why I am so happy with it. ~ Jamie

Momma H
I agree with what every body else said. I love MFW. It is so funny, because I am a tweaker and did not consider myself a person who would follow a pre-written curriculum but, it works and they do a heck of a lot better job than I could even begin to know what to do! It is just so well done. With that said, in my opinion, if you want a LOT of writing, you will have to come up with some extra assignments yourself. There are not really writing assignments per se until high school. I have my kids write (in best handwriting and with complete sentences etc.) 3-4 sentences for every section we read. This way, not only do they get some writing in but also it reinforces the history reading. You could have them do some more formal writing assignments to have them sum up or do some analysis on things but if you are looking for that kind of writing in the history it is not really there. I think (at least until high school) they let mom handle what kind of writing assignments you do for history. That being said, the program ROCKS! We just did Exp-1850 and had a blast with it! I had left MFW for a year and it was and is SO GOOD to be back. SO, I had to say that so the OP did not feel we did any false advertising. THere are wonderful notebook pages but they are not writing intensive.
