Cleopatra - history projects

Recommended Posts

* History ...... we're so enjoying the history curriculum I put together using the Grueber/Christine Miller books as a spine. I've managed to include maps, timelines, biography pages, projects and she's actually done them!

I'd love to hear what projects you are doing. I've never been successful with projects at this age.

Cordelia ( .... is your real name Anne? ;) )

Why aren't you successful with projects? Is it lack of time, interest or motivation? I always have the interest but sometimes the other two get in my way. I have enthusiasm for projects but I either don't get around to planning them or I feel other areas will suffer if we take time to have some fun. Strangely, my dd remembers most of the history projects we've done over the years but she doesn't recognize her first Spelling Workout workbook! :001_huh: So this year I decided it was important to do some projects to reinforce her learning and, to make it easier for me, I opted to buy projects that link up with our studies (Ancient Times). Yep, it's worked like a charm. :001_smile: Here's what we've done so far:

Ancient Egypt Jingo - like Bingo but you have to answer questions on Egypt correctly to put a chip on a square. (there is also one for Greece & Rome)

Professor Noggins Ancient Civilizations

Thames and Cosmos Egyptian Pyramid - this was a pleasant surprise! I thought you'd just dig into it and the mummy would be right there but no! You had to read the hieroglyphs on each side of the pyramid to know where to begin to dig, there was a secret latch you had to figure out to open up the top and then the mummy, etc. was really buried so you had to act like an archeologist and dig carefully around them to remove the items.

Lift the Lid on Mummies - contained a mummy that you had to embalm ie. remove the organs, put them in canopic jars, wrap the mummy, seal the tomb, etc.

Made Papyrus from a Kit

After Christmas, we'll be starting on Greece.

We did a couple of fun projects (from SOTW) when she was younger :

Flooding the Nile: we got an aluminum lasagna tin & designed the Nile inside, with the high mountains on one side. Along the Nile, we placed plastic palm trees, animals etc. and planted grass. We would flood it when needed and eventually the grass grew ...... we had a great time!

Archeological Dig: I roped my garden off in a grid, buried things in it and then had my dd search for them and plot what she found on paper. After she'd found everything, she had to look at each object and surmise from what she found, who lived in that area (ie. if she found an old fork, she knew they were advanced enough to have utensils, etc.)

Does that give you any inspiration? :001_smile:

Those sound like fun! Truthfully, I think I've gotten lazy over the past few years. I feel like I'm teaching my second family and while it's easy to come up with projects for the younger ones I have trouble with 7th and 8th. These last few just aren't interested in the projects the older kids liked. I'm going to look into the things you listed for Egypt and see if I can come up with something my 13 yo might like for the medieval times. Thanks! I'm inspired.
