Honey Bee
I am trying to find out by searching online, which Great Books TOG uses. I am having a hard time. I know they use Norton's, so it's hard to tell. The Omnibus list is so easy to see, wondering if TOG does about the same? My husband and I have been discussing these two, he's really sold on the Omnibus and I like how TOG is organized :D. I too like the great books in Omnibus, but I get the feel that TOG doesn't do as many. Can someone point me it the right direction? Thanks a million. BTW, I'll cross post on the HS board. Tohru
The books are listed on their Bookshelf: http://www.bookshelfcentral.com/ You'd have to choose each year and then you can filter it to only show Rhetoric level books. Maybe try selecting only Literature. Hope that helps!
Honey Bee
Thanks for that link, it's very helpful. I do wish they would publish what they use from Norton's every year, it would help so much to compare.
Susan in TN
I have used both Omnibus and TOG. I think their great books lists are comparable, although Omnibus I & 2 cover some works that aren't covered until the rhetoric stage in TOG - like the Odyssey and Iliad. Overall, I think they are both excellent programs, but I prefer TOG because of the teacher prep. and guidance, their writing program, and because it simply wouldn't be possible (timewise) for us to use Omnibus with the number of kids we have. In terms of literature study, I think TOG gives a much more thorough study of genre, literary methods, and terminology. Probably the best thing to do, if at all possible, would be to find someone with the curriculum and look over it that way. Or you might find it at a used curriculum sale, if there are any in your area.
Tohru
:D I'm actually selling TOG Y1 Revised for $150 w/ the MapAids. It's in great condition. I just prefer Classic. I browsed through the portion of TOG that just happens to be upstairs and here are the selections from Norton for weeks 20-27: Agamemnon Libation Bearers Eumenides Medea Oedipus the King Antigone Most were all Fagles translations. Is that kind of what you were wanting to know?
Honey Bee
That's exactly what I wanted to know! Your a gem! This information is hard to find online. Thanks so much for posting the info you did, I am grateful! Wishing I could buy your TOG, I'd love to get my hands on one to take a good look. Sometimes it just comes down to that. I'll have to pass though, tight budget :glare:. Edited December 3, 2010 by Honey Bee
Janice in NJ
Their Scope and Sequence page can really help you see all of the subjects in TOG; it's more than just history and literature. Some of the "Great Books" in the program are covered in the government or the philosophy credit. For our family, some not-to-be-missed items have popped up under Church History or even the Alternate Book List. Year 1 http://www.tapestryofgrace.com/year1/ScopeAndSequence1.pdf Year 2 http://www.tapestryofgrace.com/year2/ScopeAndSequence2.pdf Year 3 http://www.tapestryofgrace.com/year3/ScopeAndSequence3.pdf Year 4 http://www.tapestryofgrace.com/year4/ScopeAndSequence4.pdf Hope that helps. I personally LOVE at-a-glance documents. :001_smile: Peace, Janice Enjoy your little people Enjoy your journey
angela in ohio
I agree that the Scope & Sequence will give you a better idea. I started the year using both, but dropped TOG quickly. I decided it was better for us to focus on whole works, studied more completely, with less extra stuff to read. :001_smile: I'd rather spend my time reading and discussing the books, instead of trying to schedule and read through TOG. Tohru
Wow! Thanks for the S&S. I have TOG and didn't know about that. That program never ceases to amaze me. I'm printing those PDF's out now and it looks to be exactly what OP was looking for.
