KidsHappen
Seems like that would heat and stay warm the best but I am worried about the oils eventually becoming rancid. Is this a legitimate concern?
KS_
Seems like that would heat and stay warm the best but I am worried about the oils eventually becoming rancid. Is this a legitimate concern? I've only ever used white rice - it's cheaper and works just fine. I don't know that brown rice would stay warmer any longer. . .
Osmosis Mom
Can someone share the smartest way to make those pads? How much rice (or corn?) to fill in a bag, ratio-wise?
TKDmom
I'd stick with the white rice, too. White rice stays good for years and years. Brown rice will go bad in 6 months. Of course, you're not eating it, but I wouldn't want to risk the smell...
DarcyB
This is an instance when white rice would be better. It's been so striped, there's not a lot left to go rancid :) The bigger problem, actually, is bugs getting into it depending on where it's stored, especially if left for awhile. We found, over a summer when not used, that ours had been occupied by little buggies in our linen closet. But I'd used them for about 3 years beforehand without a problem. In The Great White North
I've used brown rice, so if that's all you have it will work. (I wasn't making heating pads though, just tying some into an old sock to hold up to an earache NOW! It wouldn't wait for a trip to the store.) Doesn't make sense to pay extra for it for heating pads though. It will also smell if you microwave it too long. I've heard of people adding a couple of drops of mint oil to make it smell better (white or brown rice).
lionfamily1999
I use dried beans ;) They conform nicely to the shape, and we've never had an issue with them going bad. They also make nice ice packs.
Chris in VA
Dd is making these for her brother and dad for Christmas. We'll just use white rice that we have in the cabinet. Osmosis Mom, if it's not a gift, the quickest/easiest way to make these is just tie up a tube sock with rice in it.
