Ame E.
Finally at 53, I'm reading (listening to) Anna Karenina.. I'm really enjoying it. When did marriages stopped being arranged in 19th century Russia, was there a specific date, or did it depend on class in society, etc? or did arranged marriages just sort of fall out of fashion? Thanks Ame
jld
No idea, really, but I wonder if it happened after the Russian Revolution in 1917? Once there was no more private property, arranged marriage probably wouldn't have seemed as interesting.
K-FL
Plus the death (literally) of the aristocracy. Arranged marriages, in general, seem to be alliances for land, or power. Once there was no more private property or generational power, there was no "use" for arranging marriages.
mcconnellboys
I would guess that after the assassination of the last Czar's family, when the revolution took place and communism began to come into play, that society broke down to some extent and the old ways began to fall away....
