HollyDay
Yes!! Look at Science Shepherd Biology. I am really excited about this program. We have done the first 3 chapters. My dd really, really, really did not like the look of Apologia Biology at all. She is a very visual learner and she did not like the "chatty" aspect of the text. She loved the look of BJU and was very excited about the subject matter. But, BJU is a bit overwhelming and her retention was poor. Science Shepherd is fairly new. Rainbow Resources told me about it. It is not as visual as BJU. Most of the diagrams are black and white. It is not chatty like Apologia. But, it does explain things in a very straight forward manner. There are sample pages available at RR as well as the publisher and (I think) cbd. It is a good "middle of the road" I think.
Teachin'Mine
You might want to look at Abeka.
