Blessed with seven
Hi, What is the big difference in Saxon 5/4 2nd edition (hardback books) vs 3rd Edition (homeschool softbound set)? Is it worth getting the homeschool edition? Thanks!! Kim
Hedgehog
Not sure if you are asking because you already have the 2nd edition and it's working for you, but are thinking to replace it with the 3rd edition (Homeschool); or whether you are looking at buying one or the other? All I can say is that we have the 3rd edition (Homeschool) for both 5/4 and 6/5 and it seems a good program to me - works well.
Blessed with seven
Yes...I have the 2nd edition and am curious if there is more/better info or something worth getting the HS, 3rd edition instead. Thanks! Kim

Hedgehog
As far as I know, there's hardly any difference between the two. They're pretty expensive so I would say just stick with what you already have.
Irishmommy
I've compared the two with a friend who has a different edition and it seems to be not much difference. One thing I did notice is that we are about the same way through each volume and she hasn't hit any geometry yet (or anything that she'd have to use a compas and protractor for) and we have already done some. I don't know if it is introduced in a later chaper or what, but other than that so far it has been a relatively small difference.
Blessed with seven
So...which version are you using the newer 3rd or older hardback? Kim
cheryl h
I think if you have either second or third edition you are fine. Art Reed has great info on which editions are best to use for each book. Basically, second and third editions are essentially the same. Same lessons and assignments, same tests, blah, blah, blah, the only difference is in pg. numbers because the margin settings are different so its not a carbon copy. However, there are big changes between the first editions and the following ones. If money is an issue and you can't afford the newer, your kids are still going to learn math, but if you want to utilize the teacher CDs or other tutorial DVD's you will need one of either the second or third editions for it to be compatible. Blessed with seven
Thank you!! I appreciate the info. I know some people prefer or "want" the 2nd Edition. I really like what comes w/ the 3rd, although the Student Text is more flimsy, as far as the quality of paper.
