Text for great artists

Recommended Posts

My dd (9th grade) is currently taking a art appreciation class thru' our local homeschool co-op. Every week the teacher discusses a particular artist and his style of painting/drawing, then for the remainder of the class the students try his/her technique. Does anyone know of some good texts for studying great artists (with color pics)?? For example dd has already studied (Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Durer, Monet, Matisse... and will be studying Norman Rockwell, Wyeth, Dali etc). I've been getting biographies off the internet, but I'd really like a engaging text for her to read alongside this class and be able to put it on her transcript (under course description).

Thanks so much for your help,

Sangita

Because there's such a variety of artists involved, I think it would be hard to find one text including them all with a great deal of information and showing many of their works. I would ask the instructor what artist she'll be doing for two or three weeks ahead of time, and then go to the library and get out books on those artists. You could also ask her what she's using and purchase that as well, but you'll probably get more in depth information in a variety of books from the library.

Thanks. Originally, I was thinking I would just get books weekly from the library. But, then thought it would be easier to buy 1 or 2 books and keep them at home lol! Are there any hs level art book titles that you've heard of that I can check out at the library?

TIA!

I'm sorry, but I'm no help. For a general book which might include many of the artists, I'd recommend a college book on art appreciation.

Barnes & Noble and other bookstores often have great art books offered at very low prices - this would be another place to look. But other than buying something which might have the artists included, I think it's best to just search your library catalog and take out a couple, or a few, books on each of the artist. This way she'll be seeing a cross-section of their works instead of just one or two which will be shown during the class time.

We like Sister Wendy's book, The Story of Painting. It has most of the artists we are looking for, lots of examples of their works plus info on how to look at them. She also does videos.

Not sure if Rockwell was in there. I think they need to be known for "paintings." But it's pretty complete as fair as painters go.

Julie,

Thanks for the post. I'll definately check out Sister Wendy's book. Perhaps our library will have it. The videos would be a get addition. I saw that the Teaching Co. also has a dvd set on great artists, but it's $$$, and can't spend that much money at this time.

Thanks!

If you want to check out that TTC set, take a look in your library's catalog. I'm always surprised at how many TTC sets my library has. Sometimes I have to use inter-library loan to get just what I want, or had to check out sets in pieces, but I've been able to peek at several series that way.

The Sister Wendy book will be much quicker, though :)

I was able to order an older edition Sister Wendy book for just $6.00 and free shipping, so I'm feeling pretty pleased about that :-)

We must have an older one. I just looked on Amazon and the cover of our book looks like the cover of the DVDs that are listed, with the white background rather than gray. It has served us just fine. Got me curious about what might have been added, though :)
