He ended up dropping Eng today--got a W--ramifications?

I don't think there will be any, but maybe I'm not thinking of everything? Remember, he's going to apply for next fall to a 4 year college. He'll have at least 3 classes (CC) under his belt, as well as average SAT and a 3.0 GPA from high school.

'Course, this is not my problem. :D

Well, in my experience, I had one "W" on my transcript from a freshman year immaturity issue and I did have to explain why I withdrew everytime I applied for a program within the university. I honestly wish it was never there because it just added another layer of red tape, but it didn't really prevent me from doing anything (I got into all majors & programs to which I applied) and by the time I got grad school no one cared anymore. So, yes, he will have some 'splaining to do when he goes to transfer, but there probably will not be long-lasting damage.

Having a "W" on a transcript is probably better than a 'D' or an 'F'.

Am I right in thinking your ds is still in high school still this year? If so, that is a good explanation for the W. He can explain by reminding the schools that he was still in high school when he took the class, that he over-extended himself, realized it, and tried to correct it by dropping the class so he could focus on his other courses. If he achieves good grades in his other cc classes, that will demonstrate he can handle college courses.

When he applies to colleges, there is usually a place on the application for any comments or explanations. This is where he needs to have a well-worded explanation for the 'W'.

I hope I am remembering the situation correctly. If I have your ds confused with someone else, ignore my post.

No, he's a college freshman at the CC. He is thinking of not taking another semester of CC just yet, and working instead, reapplying to Radford, GMU, Longwood, and maybe one or two other schools, for next fall.

He's just not sure right now. I think the fact that he is working will be in his favor when the time comes to explain the W.

Thanks, everyone.
