mjpeter
After Saxon 76, did you do 87 or Algebra 1/2? I've heard 87 on this board, but WTM recommended 1/2 if I remember correctly? What are the differences?
Teachin'Mine
We did 8/7. Honestly we did that because it was the next one in the series and I assumed we'd be following that with algebra 1/2. I didn't know at the time that it's usually an either/or situation. I could have used some hive knowledge a few years ago. :tongue_smilie: But I'm glad we went with 8/7 because the format was what dd was used to and it included the math facts practice sheets and the mental math. I think both of those are still important at that stage. The math facts included fractions, metric and standard measurements and conversions, decimals, etc.. The book will feel like a repeat of 7/6 for a good part of it, but I think repetition at the pre-algebra stage is really important, and the last 30 lessons pack a lot of totally new concepts. I haven't looked through an algebra 1/2 text to compare.
Ellie
After Saxon 76, did you do 87 or Algebra 1/2? I've heard 87 on this board, but WTM recommended 1/2 if I remember correctly? What are the differences? With earlier editions, the sequence was Math 76, Alg. ½, Alg. 1, *if* the student got at least 80% correct on each lesson. If not, then it was Math 76, Math 87, Alg. 1. With the current edition, it's Math 76, Math 87, Alg. 1, *if* the student gets at least 80% correct, Math 76, Alg. ½, Alg. 1 otherwise. Maybe the first edition of WTM was written before Saxon made the change.

HollyDay
With my oldest, I did 1/2. We had taken a TT (7 and pre-algebra) side trip between 76 and Algebra 1. She needed 1/2 to get her ready for Saxon Algebra 1 but 87 would have been too much. With my youngest I plan on doing 87 because I hope to not take too many side trips! Jenn in CA
Seconding this reply. It depends on which edition of 87 you are using. The new one (I think 3rd) has more pre-algebra in it. You can use 76-87-Alg 1. The older ones (I think 1st & 2nd) don't have enough to allow you to go from 87 to alg. 1. Then you should use 76-Alg 1/2-Alg 1.
