I'm loving everything I've found by Wm. Henry Maxwell. Here's a list of links to some other vintage books I found worth taking another look at (note--most of these titles are general, as I just had my list of links not titles). The format is nice and easy to understand, the lessons are basic about things that they are already somewhat experienced with, so it is engaging and easy to find. Alas, my computer broke earlier this year and I lost all my downloads (having the links I'd posted on here actually did help me a lot!); I spent this morning trying to find one illusive book about industrial drawing -- success at last! Meanwhile I found a bunch of others that are at least as interesting. He links to a wonderful (he thinks it's the best) phonics course for the first three years of school: Word Mastery: a course in phonics by Florence Akin from 1913. It's really a nice little book if you're teaching any little ones to read--which I always seem to be ;) Lots of great word lists! And a great note to teachers on page 110. I downloaded this one! Here's a sweet reader:Primary readers containing a complete course in phonics THis was kind of funny to me....but might be great for a child who is struggling to read or has some special needs: Illustrated Phonics Here's another reader with great illustrations: The phonetic reader OK....better stop for the night. I think I prefer the first one, just for style of writing. ETA: the preface recommends preparing oulines: Topical analyses or outlines are excellent for the purpose of showing the history as a logical and connected whole. This book is especially well adapted for the development of the outline as the paragraph headings keep the essential facts prominent. But on the printed page it is impossible to show the relation of topics one to another. The outline is valuable for the mental discipline it affords the pupil; it teaches him to discriminate between essentials and non-essentials; it stimulates the habit of comparison and it cultivates the judgment.
