There's a great thread on vintage e-books for grammar, but I wanted to start one for any great treasures you come across in your search through google.books.

I'm loving everything I've found by Wm. Henry Maxwell.

Here's a list of links to some other vintage books I found worth taking another look at (note--most of these titles are general, as I just had my list of links not titles).

Seven Little Sisters Who Live on the Round Ball That Floats in the Air

Ten Boys Who Lived on the Road from Long Ago

The Birds' Christmas Carol

Christian Children

Motherhood

Elementary Geography

Book by V.M. Hillyer

Elementary Poetry

Children's Picture book

Would love to see what other great books have been found! It's my newest pastime ;) Link away!

I found this website to have identified many wonderful items

Happy Hearts from Homeschooling Library

and I posted some time back some interesting finds in various other threads which I will summarize here; however, I'm including the threads for those who want to see what other people posted or what was discussed.

1 * Nature study books

Course in nature study: for grades one and two

by Detroit Public Schools

Nature study: one hundred lessons about plants‎

by David Worth Dennis

Nature study: a pupil's text-book

By Frank Overton

(posted in this thread on Nature study curricula)

2 * 19th Century Schoolbooks

http://digital.library.pitt.edu/nietz/

(posted in the Free Curriculum thread)

3 * Courses of study from various school districts of the past:

Course of study, Baltimore County, Maryland, public schools, grades I-VIII, 1919

Public schools of San Francisco: rev. course of study, June, 1892

The new manual and guide for teachers, 1899

Course of study for the public schools of California, 1890

A graded and annotated list based on the course of study and recommended for use in the Utica Public Schools, 1906

Course of study for the Public schools of Newark, N. J., 1897

Course of study of the public elementary and high schools of Maryland, 1914

(The topic of my thread Like old books? How about entire courses of study from years past?)

4 * Margaret Warner Morley's books

(The outcome of my research, posted in Realistic/photographic depictions of animal/human reproduction)

A small note - the Bees book contains a somewhat bizarre side trip into Chinese foot binding at one point

This is wonderful! I think I may reformat it for use as a workbook.

I am totally loving this book as well! The format is nice and easy to understand, the lessons are basic about things that they are already somewhat experienced with, so it is engaging and easy to find.

I've just found this little book:

Efficiency Arithmetic: Primary by Chadsey and Smith

http://books.google.com/books?id=z-BEAAAAIAAJ

I don't know if it's the cute borders in the beginning, or the measuring work, but I've printed off the year of interest to me!

By the way, I like these little craft type books:

Primer of Industry by Austin Craig

http://books.google.com/books?id=0cYKAQAAIAAJ

Paper Sloyd by Ednah Anne Rich

http://books.google.com/books?id=mR0CAAAAYAAJ

Ha! The funny thing is when I "find" something and download it, only to realize I already have it.

Alas, my computer broke earlier this year and I lost all my downloads (having the links I'd posted on here actually did help me a lot!); I spent this morning trying to find one illusive book about industrial drawing -- success at last! Meanwhile I found a bunch of others that are at least as interesting.

Industrial Drawing for Girls by Edith Cary Hammond

("for girls" because it has applications to dressmaking in the second half of the book)

http://books.google.com/books?id=rJHUAAAAMAAJ

Manual Training: Cardboard Construction by Trybom (who has another book called Correlated Hand-work)

http://books.google.com/books?id=jPRAAAAAIAAJ

Nice diagrams

These are great, Stripe! Thanks for sharing them.

I was in a Williams-Sonoma store the other day and they had a vintage cookbook for $45. I didn't write down the name, but wondered if it was available on Google books :001_smile:

Here's a link to the company they get them from:

Omnivore Books

Might be fun if I weren't in middle of math to go search some of these out on google.

Don Potter has a lot of good Google links to old books, especially on his Spelling Books and Latin pages. The page I've linked below also has a lot.

Thank you so much for sharing this one....what a gem! He links to a wonderful (he thinks it's the best) phonics course for the first three years of school: Word Mastery: a course in phonics by Florence Akin from 1913.

It's really a nice little book if you're teaching any little ones to read--which I always seem to be ;) Lots of great word lists! And a great note to teachers on page 110. I downloaded this one!

Here's a sweet reader:Primary readers containing a complete course in phonics

THis was kind of funny to me....but might be great for a child who is struggling to read or has some special needs: Illustrated Phonics

Here's another reader with great illustrations: The phonetic reader

OK....better stop for the night. I could go on rabbit trails all evening:D

I've had these links saved for months. I'm not sure whether I found these by myself or whether something here pointed me to them.

History of the US for the Grammar Grades (Hall, 1920) http://books.google.com/books?id=M3oAAAAAYAAJ&printsec=frontcover&dq=history+grammar&hl=en&ei=XS8xTePVI4zAsAOK2M2-BQ&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=7&ved=0CEAQ6AEwBjgU#v=onepage&q&f=false

This has discussion questions at the end of each chapter.

A History of the US for Grammar Schools (Thwaites, 1929) http://books.google.com/books?id=H20AAAAAYAAJ&printsec=frontcover&dq=history+grammar&hl=en&ei=XS8xTePVI4zAsAOK2M2-BQ&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CCIQ6AEwADgU#v=onepage&q&f=false

This one has discussion questions, composition topics, and outline headings at the end of each chapter.

I think I prefer the first one, just for style of writing. ETA: the preface recommends preparing oulines:

Topical analyses or outlines are excellent for the purpose of showing the history as a logical and connected whole. This book is especially well adapted for the development of the outline as the paragraph headings keep the essential facts prominent. But on the printed page it is impossible to show the relation of topics one to another. The outline is valuable for the mental discipline it affords the pupil; it teaches him to discriminate between essentials and non-essentials; it stimulates the habit of comparison and it cultivates the judgment.

There were many reasons for me to finally buy an eReader, but this book is the biggest reason.

The Colored Patriots Of The American Revolution

http://books.google.com/ebooks?id=Jy8OAAAAIAAJ&dq=William%20nell&as_brr=5&source=webstore_bookcard

I also like books by Kate Dickinson Sweetser, such as
