SHe is very happy and we feel relieved that one of the schools that is totally free for us has accepted her, Lynchburg College. I am really unsure why my dd is getting very welcoming treatment by a lot of colleges, many of them much higher ranked than Lynchburg. She basically bombed her PSAT and never took any SATs. She did take ACT and is taking one today but her scores, while fantastic in reading and English, are lower in math and science. So she ends up scoring well but not amazingly. (She has had major problems with the last two test dates ((bad proctor, accidentally took wrong medicine the night before and didn't sleep for 30 hours))). So I am not sure where they are getting her name and stats. I have no idea if one of the questions on ACT or pSAT had been - do you plan to apply for financial aid- and that makes a difference- she isn't. I don't know if they are checking our Zip+4 and figuring out that we live in a large house in a nice neighborhood (we rent at less than mortgage price). I don't know but she sure likes having people begging her to apply. She weeds some out herself and then asks me if there is any reason to apply. I check yellow ribbon status, the school's program and stats, and tell her yes or no. Many good schools are no because - a) not free for us b) not in a location she is willing to go c) too weird (this included a school with a deparment of gender and identity studies). That first acceptance letter is such a "peace" giver (for lack of thinking of a better word first thing this morning). From what I've been reading, pretty much all of your reasons are probably correct. First, she scored well on Reading and English and they are well aware that many English types of brains don't do as well in math. My third son is going to be this way. Second, I've read articles talking about how some colleges are really having to watch the bottom line and are trying hard to get full pays more than the highest academic. If you have a really good academic (for her expertise) student that is also full pay, she's "win, win." Beware of places that seem too far out of her scoring area. I've also read that many colleges are looking to up their numbers with US News by getting more applicants - then rejecting them (makes them appear more selective). They are allegedly purposely sending out info to students scoring lower than they normally accept - getting their hopes up - then not really accepting them. Obviously, Lynchburg isn't one of them in your case and you still have the other "plus," but still, I think it's a nasty thing to do to students. So, if the previous year they got many applicants who were all pretty much of similar score breakdowns, majoring in similar things, had similar backgrounds and achievements, etc., then the next year they may court applicants who are very different but within certain scoring paramaters. DD found that just about anywhere she applied, rolled out the red carpet and dogged her to come. I think many colleges are finding out that homeschoolers make good collegians. We started with a school that was a good fit for her but not necessarily one that she was dying to go to, so she'd get a feel for campus visits, interviewing, speaking with professors, etc. You've been through this before, but we hadn't. Ds' local uni, while a great regional school for his field, is definitely a safety school as well. We visited one school this summer and that is where she claims she wants to go. It's a state university and her grades and scores indicate automatic admission. It's not one of my top choices for her but I am thankful that she is interested in something. I guess we should get the ball rolling. Based on his grades, scores and such, we know he'd be admitted, almost certainly (98% according to their grid) to the Honors College. Been there, done that. ;) Are you waiting for others or is this "it?" He applied at 3-4 others (ok, I should know if it is 3 or 4:lol:). But OU is his top choice now. A great school (on lots of lists of those who rate schools), they try to make the first year classes low (the fresh. comp classes have 19 kids), ds likes the engineering school and it is only about 1 1/2 hours a way. Far enough he and yet close enough to come home on a weekend if he wants! Now I am looking at the 1st year courses and trying to figure out what else to do to prepare him for freshman year! She only has to fill out an application to get into their honors program too (and decide which one or ones she wants to do) since her acceptance into the honors program is automatic. Also she still needs to fill out the scholarship application for it. By early Janurary we will know all colleges except the few that have Early Decision and no other program than Regular. Dd is a junior now and plans to be there in a yr and a half. She'll be in the honors program too. The honor's dorms are gorgeous! The UA board on CC is very active. I thought it was another institution that was still needing her college transcripts (which I had mailed but after the applications since I hadn't received them yet). He told her how interesting it was to read about her adventures and how they will be sending her scholarship award letter by mail. I think some do it by email but none of my daughter's colleges has. She has been surprised that although admission decision for all the rest won't be until Dec or later, she has received a nice karabiner from one of those colleges. He also has Bryan College on his list but has been dragging his feet on the Essay.....Hmmmm.....Not sure what is going on there.....Filled out the application and sent it in....but not the essay. I don't know about nowadays, but umpteen yrs ago I received a call from a uni with a full-ride scholarship offer. (And I was so darn stupid that I turned them down in that couple of a minute span in time b/c I had my heart set on going to school where my high school sweetheart was going..........well, not really stupid, since we have now been married almost 25 yrs!!:D I will say, though, that a phone call didn't let me really assess what I was thinking which in my case is a good thing b/c that one decision might have changed the outcome of 8 little to big people. :lol:) Edited November 11, 2010 by 8FillTheHeart Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

It was a little card that said that everything was received and we could check online to see the status of the application. We checked and it said ACCEPTED! We should get a packet in the mail soon. She wants to major in Creative Writing and we did like their program there. It seemed very flexible and the teachers were very approachable. So far this university is her second choice, but we won't hear from her first choice until Dec. 10th. Oh, and the man in charge of admissons is a homeschooler. My oldest didn't want to consider it as it was too close. Well, they don't have his major either, so that was a big factor, but... Enjoy your visits! She was accepted at Ferrum College, Hollins University, and Roanoke College. We went to open houses at all 3, and were surprised at the uniqueness of each place. Roanoke College is her first choice and seems a perfect fit, and she has been awarded quite a bit in merit aid (major Praise the Lord!!). Now that all the hard work has been done, I wish she had applied at more places. She was accepted 2 weeks after she sent in her online application (one week after they received her paper transcript from us and from the cc). Now the scholarship wait begins! She's leaning towards Samford, but they're NOTORIOUSLY slow in granting $$$$. However, our EFC is a big fat ZERO (can you say, hello, unemployment?) so we're hoping that may be an unexpected benefit when it comes to receiving aid. Funny - the initial acceptance has not been a big deal. We're holding our breath until January, when we find out about being selected for scholarship interviews.
