About to throw in the towel...help?

Recommended Posts

We've been at this several years...we now have an 8th grader and a sophomore. I'm tired, life is busy...I'd like to go back to being supportive, "cheerleader" mom rather than being everything to everybody ("bus" driver, teacher, lesson planner, paper grader, counsellor, cook, housecleaner, coach etc etc)....

Our sophomore is taking Chem and Math at the local CC (9 units) and loves it. They told me to go light on him as the two classes are two of their "most failed" ones so were adding in Notgrass World History and most of the lit and an online writing class for English/comp...I think he's doing okay with that schedule for now including sports and guitar.

I had planned this for our 8th grader:

online writing course

Notgrass World History and Lit (she's ready)

Saxon Algebra

Latin III (at a local private school...uses Cambridge)

Science was going to be a high school/college level Equine Science but we're learning the book is too much for her.....so, thinking about maybe Rainbow Science??

BUT...I'm really not excited about any of it and I'm ready to send them to public/private school somewhere.....:crying:

Or...maybe a "school in a box" curricula for my 8th grader where all of the planning is done for me..:001_unsure:

Can anyone help me get out of my funk about this? What would you guys do? We started today and I'm so not excited.....

thanks

Janine

I think sometimes life is just not exciting. But I know dealing with middle school would be worse than a year of not being excited about homeschooling for me. I'm beginning to think that it's not really the homeschooling that is often the problem; it's just life. And teens are exhausting no matter how good they are. Why don't you switch sciences or do the equine science light. She doesn't have to do the whole book. I'm in the Nike mode; Just Do It. :D My dd is all of a sudden 16 and I realize how little time we have left with her at home. You could do some fun things this year especially with your younger one before she starts high school. I'm rambling but I do know how you feel. If your kids are happy and you have the same reasons to home school hang in there. I bet it gets better and you won't regret it. :grouphug:

Thank you, Starr, for the encouragement. You're right that they won't be home that much longer. I'm not pushing the academics like most on this board are. I'm looking for solid but not over the top. They both will probably spend time at the CC before heading off to a university.

As for K12...thanks for the suggestion rootsnwings but after watching a few friends do it, I am certain it would kill the love of learning in our daughter.

I think it's mostly just me. They are both happy doing what we're doing (except for the science dilemma)...and I always struggle with the ol "am I doing enough with them" thing. Sigh.....it's not even September and I already have the blues...

We were in California when we were hsing. We did community college instead of high school: once dds began taking the c.c. classes, I quit doing anything at home. All of the lower division classes are pretty much a repeat of high school and we just couldn't see doing them twice, especially since c.c. transfer students are guaranteed to be accepted at CalState or UC and at that point, no one cares about high school.

Just a thought. :-)

:grouphug: Would changing to a four day week help? Then you can ask them to do chores with you Friday mornings and take the afternoon off for a field trip or to do something fun.

Try to figure out what you dread the most, and then post it here and ask for suggestions on that one thing. Maybe some small changes will help you feel more positively about this school year.

wow...that is eye opening, Ellie. Our son took his first class last semester at the CC and is now taking two. I'm not sure our daughter will be ready for CC as early as our son was though. I'm new to all of this dual enrollment stuff. If you would care to chat about dual enrollment and transcripts offlist, I'd love to hear from you~

So...as a veteran, are you indicating that I can indeed relax a little for 8th grade science? She did Apologia General last year - she did well but really didn't enjoy it. I'd rather have excited kids who love to learn rather than ones who are trudging through material that they hate just to please me and get good test scores.

Is that right, Ellie? I've been trying to research this myself. My understanding (at least for UC) is that you can apply for the Transfer Admission Guarantee program as the cc. Those who are not in that program are not guaranteed. Also, I think only 7 UC campuses participate in the program. I know at Fullerton CC I saw a notice in the counseling center that that program is full right now as well. I'm pretty sure Berkley and UCLA are not participants in the program and I'm not aware of any guaranteed acceptance to those schools for cc students.

I haven't been able to find anything about the CSU system yet.

I'd love a point in the right direction on this.:)

Things may have changed since my dds attended, so my word is not law, doggonit. However, my dds took their c.c. classes as college students, not as dual-enrolled students. I wonder if that makes a difference? Older dd graduated from the c.c. and transferred to San Jose State with no problems; younger dd graduated from c.c. and decided not to transfer, but she, too, could have transferred to San Jose State, although she would have needed one or two other classes to transfer to UC. But yes, at that time, c.c. were accepted ahead of high school grads, at any UC or CalSTate campuses (unless the degree they wanted was impacted at a specific campus, KWIM?).

My dds (and many of their contemporaries) enrolled as college students, not dual-enrolled students. Not all c.c. are willing to do that; possibly the ones which are more open to it are the ones who were vigorously challenged by the parents. :D At any rate, I had planned almost from the beginning to do community college instead of high school. Older dd has never had to show a high school transcript; younger dd when she applied to a private college, but it was optional. Even so, 8th grade classes are not included on a high school transcript, and a high school transcript could easily consist of c.c. courses.

You can PM me if you want. :-)
