What classes are dc taking. My ds is all at home except science:

 

Religion: Our moral life in christ (didache series)

Gov't/economics: abeka plus ttc dvd series using Federalist and Anti Federalist papers (I forget the name of the ttc dvd)

Calculus: saxon

Spanish 3: continue rosetta stone

Senior science research: out sourced to area homeschool science center

Literature: Don't want to trust my memory on titles but have about 8 books with progeny press study guides

Essays: throughout all subjects (except calculus) one at least every other week

 

Just wondering and wanting to see what other seniors are taking.

He is doing literature at home with the other boys. I think we will add a 4th course in the spring semester, but I'm not sure which one yet.

I have a senior--he homeschooled 1st-10th grade and did full time Running Start (dual enrollment) at the cc last year for 11th. This year he'll also be mostly at the cc.

 

Last year did 3 quarters of college calc so no math this year.

 

Wants to do the "majors" chem series so that will be all year

Spanish--needs to do all three quarters to meet foreign language requirement

English Comp fall quarter

winter/spring needs a fine arts course and then ?? I don't know what else he'll choose.

 

It's strange not having him at home and not getting much input into his courses but he has thoroughly enjoyed his college classes (and the social life!) and has done very well so far.

*These are all chosen to be the bare minimum to ethically give a credit (I've never done this before) but his focus needs to be on the first two, as well this his only outsourced course explained below.

 

He takes one class at the local Career Center, but it's a doozy! It's called the Computer Networking Academy. It's 3 hours every day for two academic years. This will be his second year in the program. It's worth 3.5 credits each year, plus at the end of the 2nd year, assuming he continues to do well, he'll have 18 credit hours granted from the local CC, plus several professional certifications if he passes the right tests. (He's already passed a couple to earn a certificate called CompTIA A+ something or another.) All this for free - we're finally getting something for all those property taxes to support the local school.

Cautionary note, if D goes over 30 credit hours she will no longer be considered a freshman and she is applying to an Honors College as an incoming freshman vs. a transfer student (admission criteria is different), so she needs to still be a freshman.

Science: AP Physics C Electricity & Magnetism (took Physics C Mechanics last year)

Science: AP Enviromental Science

Social Science: AP US Government (a 1 semester government course is required so he figured he'd just take the AP)

Social Science: AP Psychology

English: AP English Literature

Religion: Christian Lifestyles (the required senior level course)

 

No language this year as Latin 4 conflicts with AP Psych. No Wind Ensemble this year as it conflicts with AP Psych. Sigh. So he's in marching band this fall and will probably be in jazz band in the winter.

Angie, I have a quick question (not meaning to hijack the thread, but doing so anyway...) My D is taking ONE class at the local CC and it's only 3 hours (2x a week) but the drive back and forth adds another 4 hours to the total time, really interfering with our homeschool time and hours needed for an additional online cc class...how does you D manage all those on-site classes? Do you live super close to the CC? Does she arrange to have them all in one day? !

We have two cc campuses close to us (and a 3rd one that opens up this semester).

 

The closest campus is just 2.5 miles away. My dd can get there in 7 minutes by car or 30 minutes by bike. For the fall semester, all her classes will be at this campus.

 

The other nearby campuses are each 30 minutes away at nontraffic times, but a full hour away in rush hour. Last fall she had a class at one of those campuses and it was major pain. We had to leave the house at 7:15am so she would get there by 8:15am (were late twice when there was torrential downpour). Then I drove 30 minutes back home. Two hours later, I drove 30 minutes back out there to pick her up and then another 30 minutes to get back home again. She had a class at that campus this summer, but she had her license, so she drove herself. It was outside of traffic time, so it was just 30 minutes each way.

 

Right now her schedule is:

M/W 10:30-12:00 Japanese III

M/W 2:50-4:20 Physics I

M/W 4:25-5:25 Physics lab

M/W 5:30-7:00 Statistics

Tu/Th 10:30-12:00 English I

 

So Mondays and Wednesdays are pretty full with 1.5 hours of class in the morning and a 4 hour block in the afternoon. Then she has another 1.5 hours on Tu/Th. I plan for her to do her government course on Tu/Th/F

for the record, this is a very artsy and NOT mathy kid. She did well in science, but math is the pits for her. She finished the last class of a very good writing teacher last year, and has already tested into Eng 101 at cc, so i'm not making her do any extra grammar or writing. She'll do enough in Am. Lit to be good. She has some civics from last year to finish up, as well as finishing up a little bit of Algebra 1 with ALEKS, and finishing some Geometry, while trudging through Alg 2. Math is her grindstone :o). She loves and excels at music, theater and art (she takes an outside art class for fun as well).
