Geometry after lials introductory alg 1?

Recommended Posts

I have Jacobs. Given the drasticly different style of Jacobs, I'm concerned it won't be as great a fit as lials as been when my 2nd born is ready for it in approximate 6 months or so.

Is there a lials-like geometry option? Preferably with a solutions manual?

Hmm, I also have LoF and key to... But we really like Lials and I'm nervous about geometry bc of this. Maybe I'll just go straight to lials alg 2...

Well, Margaret Lial did write a Geometry text. (If that isn't Lial's-like, I don't know what is!)

Essentials of Geometry for College Students (2nd Edition) by Margaret Lial and others

I have no first hand knowledge of the book even though my daughter used Lial's Beginning and Intermediate Algebra. One does not often hear mention of it on this board either.

Regards,

Kareni

Lial does have a Geometry text--but it is not used as much since most community colleges do not have Geometry as an upper math pre-req.

I know there has been a few families on this board who have used it in the past--not sure if they are still around though...

Because it is not 'popular' they did not produce the DVTs to go with this course. Also used text seem to be a bit pricey too (not as many to go around). The text is written in the same style/format though.

I don't have a copy on hand so I can't go into any more detail...

I chose Holt Geometry 2009 for my online classes this year... I have taught Geometry many times though--and I can easily wade through the teachers supplementary materials to tailor the course to my needs. Not sure if I would classify this as a 'homeschool' friendly program though... the teacher supplement (One Stop Planner) is ESSENTIAL... and it has a lot of material to wade through--but it does contain--compete solutions, TE on disk, worksheet supplements, tests, quizzes... and more. It is sometimes difficult to find and impossible to purchase from the publisher without a school PO--so you have to 'wait' for it to show up at a decent price on Amazon and similar places. Student text runs about $70 used (it is still a current PS text) and the One Stop Planner is anywhere from $30-100 (and up) if you can find it.

One nice thing is that Dr Burger (of Thinkwell) is the main author--he also has FREE online videos for each example in the text--it does NOT replace the teacher--but it is a great support for the student.

I looked at the Holt support site and couldn't find these, although I found some other great resources. Are they still available?

The online videos are accessed through a code that is in the student text.

Sample

at http://www.thinkcentral.com

type MG7 4-6 into the blue box (space between the 7 and the 4)

Even with the video support the student will need access to a parent/teacher/tutor for questions and for help in grading the proofs (more than one correct way).
