Janie
I really wanted to give my students their year's handouts all at once, nicely coil-bound, but when I went in to Staples, they only can coil-bind up to 150 sheets. The largest book I've got will be 250 pages. I've got history, geography, and writing combined and ready to go, but no one around here seems to be able to handle the page amount I have. I KNOW that coils come large enough to handle what I want to do. I've looked at Lulu, but cannot upload all my stuff--some of it is only a hard copy and not on my computer, that's why I wanted a brick-and-mortar store. When I talked to Staples, they told me that even on their larger page orders, they have to twist the coil in by hand. I've thought about buying the coils, having them punch the holes, add covers and wind it for me. Is there any other alternative or advice someone could give me? Thanks! Aunty Social
Could you break it up into 2 books? Then you could either hand it all out at once and make them responsible for not losing the second half, or hold onto the second book and hand it out at the appropriate time. Ali in OR
I'm using something I remembered having in my college days--book rings. You 3-hole punch your papers, then put a metal ring through all of the top holes, another through the middle holes, and a third through the bottom holes. I bought a package with 40 book rings from Office Max for probably $3-$4 (don't really remember, but pretty cheap). I'm thinking of teaching a co-op science course and if I need to bind papers, this is how I'll do it as students only pay a $10 materials fee that needs to cover everything. I think you can use a cardstock cover and back to make it a bit more durable, but it will not be as durable as a coil binding. I just got the small book rings (about 1") but there were much larger ones available too.
