starwarsmomma
I started thinking, I could be a handwriting instructor... The problem is, I don't have a college degree (long story, we're too poor to go back now) HWT has a program to become a certified handwriting therapist, but they require a college degree. Is there another program out there, that I can get certified with that doesn't require a degree? I would LOVE to do this. Please don't bash. I honestly don't believe I need a teaching certificate or a college degree to teach handwriting. It's not rocket-science, ya know? Laurie
Who would your potential clients be? I don't think it would be a good idea to call yourself a "therapist" without a background in something like occupational therapy. "Tutor" would probably be a more appropriate title. My dd has dysgraphia and I took her to an occupational therapist for help. She told me that given the severity of the problem it would be better to focus on keyboarding. Handwriting may not be "rocket science" but in our situation I honestly have more confidence in what she tells me given her education and years of experience than I would from someone who gets some sort of "handwriting therapist" certificate. So parents with special needs children might not be potential clients, especially if they happen to have insurance that would cover occ. therapy sessions. Do you think there would be enough potential clients where you live? Could you offer calligraphy classes to small groups of students? That might be another option for you. Could you teach keyboarding? :001_smile:
Jean in Newcastle
Do you think you could tutor handwriting without the HWT certificate? If you advertised in your school district to tutor kids in handwriting, you might very well get some clients. But it would be better if your offerings were more diverse - perhaps all of language arts?
